Microsft Word V.x quits consistently every time I try to start up !? Please help
Macs in Huntley - 01 May 2008 17:40 GMT > Microsft Word V.x quits consistently every time I try to start up !? Please help Word 2008 opens fine for me on a MacBook running 10.5 but it crashes EVERY time I try to save changes. Rarely I can recover what was in the file. If I use "Save as," then it is oK but requires the extra step of confirming that Ii want to replace the existing file.
John McGhie - 02 May 2008 11:37 GMT Saving to a network? That's known bug and there's a fix on the way.
In the meantime, "work offline": use Finder to copy the file to your desktop, work on it there, then copy it back with Finder.

John McGhie - 02 May 2008 11:39 GMT Missing service packs, in your case.
Word X needs an update to run in Tiger.
Go to the Microsoft website, download the 10.1.9 update and run it. Then repair permissions.
Hopefully that will sort it out.
Cheers

mvier@officeformac.com - 02 May 2008 14:49 GMT Thanks for your input John.
I did download the 10.1.9 update and installed it as you suggested but unfortunately Word still crashes :-( As does PowerPoint by the way...
Fortunately Excel and Entourage are doing fine (for now)
I think one of the Apple downloads must have affected Word... hopefully there will be a patch soon !
Regards ! Mike

Since you don't specifically say that you did so, just installing the update *isn't* enough. You also need to run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions & restart your Mac.
If you continue to have the problem follow the additional instructions in the order they are provided here:

Then if necessary, here:

Thanks for your input !
I did as you suggest: ran Disk Utility, repaired Disk Permissions, restarted computer but am still having problems opening Word. It crashes on me when I click on the application icon.
The amazing thing is that when I doubleclick on a Word document icon, instead of the Word application icon, Word will start up without any problem !?
I'll go to the sites you mentioned and see if I can figure this out !
Thanks again !
Mike

I tried the last link on your post and created a new Normal template. Word still crashes when I double click on the Application Icon but not when I do so on the Icon of a Word document.
Really weird !
Anyway, I'm very happy to be able to open Word even if it isn't thru the usual route.. I'll just keep using this method for now. It's good enough for me !
Thanks again for your interest and your help ! Mike

There are some dependencies to get Word X running on later versions of OS X.
Hope this helps
