Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Power PC

I just started using Word 2008. I send a document to two people, one with a PC and one with a Mac running Office 2004. Neither could open the document. When the Mac person tries to open it, the document opens in Textedit. Did MS make Office 2008 so that previous versions can't open Word docs unless they are saved in an old format? I started saving docs in an old format so others could open them.

Yes, Office 2008's native file formats are the same as the newest
WinOffice version (Office 2007), called Office Open XML format.

The user with 2004 can get converters from the Mactopia site as well as
other options for opening Word & PPt files saved in the newer format:

Please put out a caveat!

according to the information when you click on the (beta) converter. Its
says under no circumstances install this converter set if you have
Office2008 already installed on the hard drive to which Office2004 is
located. It will do irreparable damage to your Office2008 install
requiring the need to completely remove and reinstall Office2008.

I've tried running the installer from my Firewire drive with OSX.4.11
installed and and even if you direct it to the drive with 2004 installed
it will attempt to install it in 2008. I stopped it time before it did
any damage.

Read the detail on the page you see before you push download.

I won't be able to install on my tower because I can only use OSX.3.9

And I have both installed on my Laptop. so until the permanent version
comes out (if ever). stay away from converter if you already have 2008
installed.

A valid point re the conflict, Phillip, but the user needing the converter
is *not* using 2008 - the OP creating the files is the one using 2008, the
recipients who can't read the files are using 2004. If a user has 2008 or
both 2008 *&* 2004 installed the converter shouldn't be needed, so I
wouldn't suggest that anyone with 2008 install the converter in the first
place:-)
