Mail Merge to Labels

I am trying to create labels and have followed the "Create mailing labels by using mail merge" instructions. A document containing a table of data (WORD) created for merge cannot be opened as a data source because "it is a Mail Merge main document" says the warning. Original was created in v X, converted in bot v 2004, and now in 2008--when I edited names. This is the first time I have tried mail merge since vX. The suffix on the file name is .doc, but file name at top of window says name.doc [Compatibility Mode]. Please advise.

Hello Violet -

From your description it sounds like it may be failing because the data
source document is *open* - close the file (or at least make sure it isn't
in the foreground when you attempt to select that same file as the source) &
try again:-) It thinks your trying to merge the file with itself.

Thanks for the advice––but the document was not open when I tried this . . . The message cited in my posting was what came up when I tried to open it using the instructions.

OK - but somewhere along the line that's apparently what happened:-) It's
very east to do.

To fix it try this: Open the data document, display the Mail Merge Manager
palette. In the first section (Select Document Type) click the Create New
button & select Restore to Normal Word Document command, confirming the
Resore. Then save & close the document. You should then be able to use it
again as a data source.

To help avoid the problem in the future don't click Create New in the MMM
while the data source document is the active window - that's how it usually
happens. Either close the data doc before creating a new main doc or at
least create a new blank doc before hitting Create New.
