In Word 2004 the formatting palette shows only five styles at one time. I want to show more than five. How can I customize the formatting palette to do that?

If you're talking about the size of the style window, you can't change
it.

Otherwise, with the List dropdown set to "Available styles", any style
in use will be shown in that window using the scroll bar. Setting the
List dropdown to "All styles" will add more (but not all) built-in
styles, as well as all styles in use.

thanks for the quick reply.

it would save me time editing if i could access all available styles without scrolling. i hope microsoft adds this as an option for customizing the formatting palette

It could save you even more time to add keyboard shortcuts to style
names.

For instance, if you rename "Body Text" as "Body Text,bt" you can then
type CMD-SHIFT-s, followed by "bt" (no quotes) to apply the style.

Since you're in Word04, you could also create a new toolbar and put the
styles on the toolbar. I do this with all my templates, and use event
code to customize the toolbar on the fly for the "allowed" styles within
each template (never any direct formatting!).

I suspect that won't happen, since the 2008 version's the same, and
redesigning the palette would be a major undertaking. However, you might
tell MS via Help/Send Feedback to let them know this is important to you.

A different problem with Formatting Pallette for Word 2008 -- the font is too small! Is there any way I can make the font bigger (short of dealing with "accessibility features")? Not only is the small font hard to read for anyone over 50, but since it's so small, when I'm scrolling through the style list using the mouse (as opposed to keyboard) the list often goes by so fast I overshoot.

A way to select what font I want to use for the Pallettes would be really nice.

If you're using the slider, you may gain a bit more control by using the
arrows.

Personally, I only use the "Available Styles" setting, which reduces the
style set to (mostly) those styles in use (I rarely have more than about
20 or so styles in any one document template).

AFAIK, that's not possible.

I cannot get the formatting palette to open either from view or from the standard tool bar - I just zips across the screen off the side of the screen? :frown:
