copying from Preview and Acrobat Reader into Word

I've run into an annoying problem. When cutting and pasting a graphic or
chunk of text from a PDF into a Word document, the behavior of Preview
and Acrobat Reader are very different. If I use Preview, most of the
time, the resulting "image" is simply a black rectangle -- in other
words, no image. If I use Reader, I get the original image, which I can
resize. I have tried the same experiment with PDF Pen and it behaves
just as Preview does -- black image.

Anyone know the reason for this behavior and if it can be corrected?
This is with 10.4.9 and Word 2004. But it's happened with most versions
of OS X I've used.

What level of update have you applied to Word?  This was supposed to be
resolved by one of the service packs, I believe.

The last but one, I think. There may have been an update in 2008 that I
haven't applied.

To respond to another poster's comment. I did apply all the latest
Office updates. That didn't change the situation, however.
