Hello, I'm using Word 2008 on a MBP Santa Rosa 2,4 2 GB RAM.
I'm preparing a book based on my thesis which is very long (1000
pages). I'd like to do a fresh start (erase all index entries, styles)
and I've heard that Copy and Special Paste to Plain Text is the cure.
But when i do that, all my footnotes disappear.

Also, to fasten the speed of Word 2008, is it necessary to go for 4 GB
RAM ?
Thanks.

Although there may be other approaches I'm taking you at your word:-)... are
you sure you want to do this?

The first thing you need to do is to "unlink" the fields: Command+A,
Shift+Command+F9, then Command+C to copy. Then use your Edit> Paste
Special - Unformatted Text in a new blank doc. Save with a different name so
as to not overwrite the original. You will retain the footnotes & footnote
text, but they will no longer be of the "automatic" variety.

However, you will also lose any graphic content and table structure which
will have to be reinserted. Also, any Bookmarks, Captions, etc. will be left
behind as well, so make sure that when you close the original to say No to
saving changes to it. That will preserve it with everything intact & the
fields still linked so you can refer to it for anything you want to
recreate. You will also have to edit out any TOC or Index content that got
pasted into the new doc.
