Marking one word with a double-click doesn't work with the updated word 2008 (12.01). Is this right or does the/my program has a problem. I tried all kinds of combinationsand settings. Also "automatically mark a whole word" (translated from German) doesn't work. Is there another simple way? In all other programs a double-click works....
CyberTaz - 27 Mar 2008 23:41 GMT Well, it certainly isn't a universal problem with Word - I have 12.0.1 on my G5 Tower as well as my Intel MBP and all works as it should:-)
Just to level the field run Disk Utility - Repair Disk permissions, restart your Mac & see where we have to go from there.
BTW - "Automatically select entire word" shouldn't have any effect on double-clicking. That only comes into play when dragging to select.

Alan_LOnghurst@officeformac.com - 07 May 2008 22:17 GMT I have the same problem intermittently on Word 08 and OSX.5.2, and double-clicking doesnt work again today. I tried 'repair disk permissions', with no effect. Its a Word problem, not an OS problem, because double-clicking always works fine in AppleWorks.
Any ideas, anybody?

CyberTaz - 08 May 2008 04:39 GMT Not sure what to tell you Alan. I've been using Word 2008 starting with the Beta Testing in OS X Tiger as well as the released product in both Tiger & Leopard - have never had this happen (although I'm still using 10.5.0). I've not moved into 10.5.2 as yet because it seems that a lot of stuff is broken in that update. That may have some bearing on the issue, but there don't seem to be many reports of similar behavior.
Further, double-clicking to select a word is not an application-specific feature, it's globally supported by the OS. The fact that any OS functionality falters more in one program than others doesn't necessarily mean the program is at fault. There are a number of variables that cone into play, so it's hard to nail down - especially if it happens intermittently.
Do you notice any difference if you restart Word? If you restart your Mac? What type of Mac? RAM? Type of mouse or 3rd party driver? Other software running at the same time? Any helper apps or haxies - especially ones that affect keyboard/mouse behavior?

Thanks for adding your name: makes this whole forum much friendlier. I wish everyone did it :-)
Chances are, this is an interaction with Spaces. If you are running spaces, you'll get weird UI problems with Office 2008.
It's a logged bug. Hopefully it will be resolved in the Service Release that is due soon.
Hope this helps

Alan_LOnghurst@officeformac.com - 08 May 2008 10:11 GMT Bob, John Many thanks. I'm on a 2008 2GB MacBook, and I do not have 'Spaces'. I have re-installed Office 08, to no effect. Double-clicking doesnt work in this box, but it does work in AppleWorks text. I also have intermittent failure in the 'Click key sound' facility: right now it doesnt work, although y'day it did. I have re-installed Office 08, no result. Should I do an archival re-install of the OS and see what happens without updating to 5.2? Sincerely, Alan Longhurst
CyberTaz - 08 May 2008 11:42 GMT Hi Alan -
One thing I can tell you for certain is that reinstalling Mac Office *rarely* fixes anything - especially if a proper & complete Removal isn't done first. That's a "fix" that's common on Windows primarily due to the inherently potential devastation & intimidation of trying to hack the Windows Registry in order to correct everything from minor annoyances to major malfunctions. Mac OS just doesn't work that way:-)
BTW - Having reinstalled Office you'll also need to apply the 12.0.1 updater again if you haven't done so already... Another "downside" to reinstalling:-)
It would help to have the additional answers I requested in the 3rd paragraph of my previous reply, but I don't think an archive & install is needed just yet - although the key click issue suggests that something isn't quite right with the OS [I'm assuming you mean the feature in the OS X Universal Access preferences. If I'm correct you might also re-check the settings there as they can induce such an effect].
The next thing I'd try is downloading & re-applying the 10.5.2 Combo Update which you can obtain here:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1052comboupdate.html
That's one of the things that scares me about updating to 10.5.2 - prior to Leopard there were separate updaters for PPC/Intel. Now they're trying to do both processor bases with 1 updater & I'm not convinced it's as efficacious as I'd like it to be.
You may also need 1 or both of the following:
<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookmacbookprokeyboardfirmwareupd ate10.html>
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookefifirmwareupdate12.html
Run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions after applying any of the above, restart your MB and let us know what happens. If that doesn't resolve things give us the other answers... We'll go from there.
Just one other though - I take it you're dbl-clicking with the built-in console controls. Do you have an external (USB or wireless) mouse available? See if you have the same problem if you can beg/borrow one for a few days.

By the way... One of the following
Digital Raw Compatibility Update 2.0 Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 Time Machine and Airport Updates 1.0 Security Update 2008-02 Safari 3.1.1 (10.5.3)
Caused my PowerBook G4 12" to go into endless loop on startup. I had to archive and install the OS from the disk. I followed the sequence of updates that got me to 10.5.2 -- tried to update to 10.5.3, and it happened again.
Are there any known issues with any of these updates?
John McGhie - 08 May 2008 15:18 GMT I have no idea what the answer to your question is, but I am fairly certain that anyone who does know will not be looking in a thread titled "marking one word with a double-click" :-)
Post a new question of your own and you'll catch a lot more fish :-)
Cheers
