Rory Cooney - 15 Mar 2008 22:24 GMT greetings.
Clip Art gallery crashes every time I use it in Office for Mac 2008. It launches properly from the INSERT - PICTURE - CLIPART menu, i can click "ONLINE" and get Safari to launch, and i can search and download the .cil "cocoon" files. but as soon as I double-click the ".cil" file on my desktop, I get a message that "Microsoft Clip Gallery has encountered a problem and needs to close." This happens every time i try to bring in any downloaded cocoon files from the Microsoft site.
This is a new phenomenon, i've never had a problem in any previous incarnation of Office, and I've used it for about as long as it's been out. Please help if you can.
Beth Rosengard - 16 Mar 2008 19:59 GMT Hi Rory,
I have no idea if this will help but try trashing your Clip Gallery Preferences:
Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Clip Gallery Preferences Home/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.ClipGallery.plist
(If you only have one of those files, don't worry about it. I have both Word 2004 & 2008 on this machine and one of those probably belongs to 2004.)
Also, maybe you need to drag the .cil file into the Clip Gallery folder before it will open? Worth a try.
Another thing to try: Repair disk permissions (Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility)

Have you applied the update? Thanks to both Beth and you . Yes, I installed the update, and also trashed the pref files Beth was talking about, but I still am not getting any cooperation from the program in importing or click-adding the .cil files from the MS website. Sometimes, just "nothing" happens, no import and no crash, but usually Clip Gallery crashes, launching error reporter, which generates another error that CG has to be launched from within word etc etc.
I still haven't done the permissions repair route - if I can do that today I will and report back. thanks. Rory
Steve L - 07 Apr 2008 22:39 GMT HI all,
I have just discovered all the same stuff as you. I can download the clip art using the Clip art finder etc, but when I come to try and load it i get the message that this clip art if not compatible with this program, In addition to this I have tried to use the included pictures in formatting bullets provided with Office 2008 and it tells me that this type of image in NOT compatible with this program!!!
Now having looked on the Microsoft Clip art website I discover that under the Mac programs supported Office 2008, Word 2008 and PowerPoint 2008 do NOT occur, the latest version of Mac office is 2004, even though the latest version of Office (for PC) is 2007.
I need a work round, or the new all singing all dancing version of Office is becoming less useable and useful than 2004.
Does anyone at Microsoft have any ideas what is going on? DOe anyone at Mactopia have any ideas to help?
Steve
CyberTaz - 07 Apr 2008 23:27 GMT How are you trying to "load it"?
Once you d/l the .cil navigate to it in a Finder window & dbl-click it. The image(s) within it should load load the images to your Favorites in the Gallery then you can access them through it. If you're trying to unzip or unstuff or open it with some other approach than MS Clip Gallery 12.0.0 it would explain the message.
I'm running Office 12.0.1 in Tiger 10.4.11 on a G5 here with no problem. If it isn't working that way for you please furnish specific about your system & software specs as well as exactly how you're attempting to access the .cil file... And don't worry about 2008 not being listed on the web site - keep in mind that it's maintained by the Windows minions, most of whom don't even know that MS *has* a MacBU let alone what the latest version for Mac is:-)

After double-clicking the .cil file, there are no new pictures in the "favorites" tab, or anywhere else, in MS Clip Art 12.0.0.
I have a G4 Dual 1.25 gh (mirrored drive door) with 1.5 gb RAM, and am using MS Office 12.0.1.

CyberTaz - 11 Apr 2008 11:35 GMT Hi Rory -
Have you tried Control-clicking the .cil then Open With Microsoft Clip Gallery? Make sure it's looking for MS Clip Gallery 12.0.0 rather than a prior version. You may have to reset .cil Open With properties in Get Info.

Thanks for the info bob, but like Rory I just can't download any Microsoft clip art, and as I have lost (Somewhere) all the stuff I did have with my Office 2004 I am getting a bit sad. :-(( I am running Office 12.0.1, on Leopard MacOS 10.5.2 on a dual G5 machine. As always I find the Clipart I need on the Microsoft website through Insert Clipart - Online... then download the file, double click and then I get an error, if I try and open the .cil file twice the Clipart program quits, sends me a window asking if I want to report the problem etc, then of course I can't restart clipart as it can only be started from inside Office.
Two big questions - where is my clipart from before? and if I find it can I use it? - i still have the OfficeX disc and have tried importing from that but no use 'cause it tells me that this type of file is not recognized by 2008! now that's nice.
I have tried Control; clicking as suggested and still no joy, I am using ClipGallery 12.0.0
Interestingly I noticed that the error message always comes up with Failed to open XXXXXXX.wmf where as the file in my clipart gallery is XXXXpng - Has this any bearing?
I am struggling now, Any advice?
Steve

When i download the clipart from the website, it saves as a file named clipart in my downloads folder. Opening this file launches clip art gallery, but it gives an error message saying that it can only be launched from within office!
However, trying to import the file in clip art gallery once launched from office is impossible as it does not recognize it.
Can anyone confirm that they have been able to use this feature in office 2008???

on my PC Office 07 I can just "insert">clipart and look for online clipart within the insert clipart window, no need to get online and download anything... won't Office 08 for Mac have this feature also?

John McGhie - 25 Apr 2008 07:59 GMT The solutions presented here all work for the people who present them. Are you suggesting that you are not as clever as them? :-)
Mac Office 2008 does not have its own "Downloadable Clipart" feature. There's clipart on the installation disk.
If you use Insert>Picture>Clipart, it opens the Clipart Gallery. If you click Online there, it takes you to the same Clipart download as Word 2007 uses.
If you follow the suggestions in here, you will be able to download them, and they will actually work.
What happened when you tried it?

i'm sure you mean well, and I appreciate that you're taking the time to check this thread, but the solutions posted here so far do not work for me. Clip gallery launches, the files download into .cil archives, and double-clicking those archives does nothing. At best it does nothing, at worst it crashes Clip Gallery, and one has to start again from the insert->picture->clipart->online. It's a circle that goes nowhere.
Am i to understand from your post that there are people using Office for Mac 08 and who are able to use the Clip Gallery program from within Word and who are able to download .cil files from the MS website and insert them into documents? In a way, I'd like to know that I'm the exception, that the program actually works, but I'm not sure that people are all talking about the same thing. once again, I'm interested in Office for Mac 08 (including Clip Gallery 12.0.0), using the current version of Leopard (10.5.2).
Eric Waldbaum [MSFT] - 29 Apr 2008 23:38 GMT Hi Rory, Thank you for reporting this information. There have a been a variety of issues reported about importing online clip art into the Clip Gallery. This doesn't appear to be specific to getting to the Clip Gallery from Word (i.e., see the thread at: http://www.officeformac.com/ProductForums/PowerPoint/482). We have been actively investigating a database corruption issue that can occur. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Laurieusual@officeformac.com - 30 Apr 2008 04:55 GMT I believe I have tried every solution offered here with no success. I am working on a PowerBook G4 in Leopard (10.5.20) Powerpoint 2008, with Safari 3.1.1. as my browser. When I try to import a piece of clipart from the MS site it downloads but trying to move the download into the gallery (by clicking on the download) causes the gallery to close. Occasionally it will tell me that it can't load the particular file type, but not always. About one time in 25 it works. Sometimes i can't even get art in the gallery to insert to my slide.
Based on feedback here, I deleted the suggested preferences, repaired permissions and added all available updates for both Leopard and MS 2008. When I couple this with Entourage's syncing problems, I may well be better of returning to 2004. Any help would be much appreciated. Laurie
Eric Waldbaum [MSFT] - 30 Apr 2008 23:01 GMT Hi Laurie, Sorry to hear you (and others) have found some issues in Office 2008, but thanks for reporting them. This information can be really helpful for making the user experience better with Office for Mac.
Are the files you download .cil files? The Clip Gallery does not read .mpf files. On the download page where you can click "Download Now" it should say "Import into Clip Gallery for Macintosh" as the Media Application. If it doesn't then please retry downloading that clipart and it should then say the proper message, download as .cil, and import when double-clicking. It may be a network issue with the Office for Windows website and we're investigating what is going on here.

I don't even have to try downloading clip art, these are files I used frequently in Office 2004. I have office 2008, leopard 10.5.2. I've tried trashing the preferences. If I try to open it, the mac crashes. If I do not trash the preferences, the computer crashes immediately I choose select clip art from the menu. By crash I mean needs a hard reboot. I'm very sorry I switched to Office 2008.

I'm very sorry I switched to > Office 2008. I guess there isn't much much to be said since you've apparently drawn your conclusions already, but I will offer a few points for your consideration:
1- All of the posts in the thread you hijacked pertain to a totally different issue involving the downloading of clipart - none of them concern crashes in any way,
2- That issue is known to not be an Office-specific problem, but is attributable to one of certain issues detailed in a post from John McGhie - same thread, but 2 weeks later than the one to which you "replied",
3- All of the posts in this thread pre-date the availability of the 12.1.0 update by at least a week, so it's impossible that the update caused them even if they were the same problem you're experiencing,
4- Since that release yours is the first mention of of such a problem in either the Word or Office group, and finally
5- Although I'm running 10.5.0 rather than 10.5.2 I am using 12.1.0 on a MacBook Pro. I'm able to insert as much clipart in a Word document as I choose without any hesitation, let alone crashes. And it doesn't make any difference whether it's a Word 2008 .docx or prior file in Compatibility Mode. That's the case regardless of whether I use the Insert> Picture> Clip Art command, the Clip Art button on the Drawing Toolbar, or the Clip Art group of the Object Palette in the Toolbox.
Since it's evident that the Clip Art Gallery does indeed work with 12.1.0 it suggests that the trouble you're experiencing could be an issue local to your system. If you are willing to consider the possibility that this just "may" be the case perhaps you'd see fit to post a *new* message detailing all particulars so those who have no reason to be revisiting this thread will be more likely to notice it and offer assistance.

It may be that yours is one of the few Clip Databases that has corrupted. If that's the case, I may be able to persuade Eric to tell us how to create a new one and import your clips to it.

Thanks.
> Hi Rory: > [quoted text clipped - 34 lines] > > interested in Office for Mac 08 (including Clip Gallery 12.0.0), using > > the current version of Leopard (10.5.2). John McGhie - 06 May 2008 12:29 GMT How did you get the .mpf file?
Whenever I try it, the Microsoft Clip Gallery downloads .cil to my Mac, and that will load into the Clip Gallery with a double-click.
If you are seeing .mpf (media package file) I think you are downloading with a Windows machine (or a browser pretending to be one).
There is no decoder on the Mac for .mpf. It's an encrypted package file.
You either need to decode the package in Windows, then copy the individual files to your Mac, or you need to re-download the same files from your Mac, this time admitting that you are using Safari as your browser and have a licensed version of Office 2001 or later installed.
You will then be sent a .cil file that will install to Office with a double-click :-)
The situation is that a large percentage of the files available on the Microsoft Clip Gallery are provided by outside companies. Microsoft pays these companies per download for their files. Microsoft got a little sick of filling Linux computers with free clip-art, so now they check that you're a paying Microsoft customer before buying clipart on your behalf to send to you :-)
Cheers

I don't understand this as well.

Yes, that's what I am saying. When you go into the download site, it should sense that you are on a Mac and hand you a .cil instead of a .mpf.
If you are offered a .mpf, it's no good to you on a Mac. We can't unpack .mpfs.
Just cancel and refresh the webpage. Hopefully it will figure out that you are on a Mac on the second try.
As the long-suffering Eric (who has the job of making this work for us...) said: they suspect there's a bug in the detection code on the website. Of course, it never happens when they try it, but it happens often enough to catch us out.
The bottom line is that a .mpf file contains Windows Digital Rights Management code that cannot be decoded on a Mac. So if it offers you one, cancel and save your bandwidth :-)
Cheers

Eric Waldbaum [MSFT] - 07 May 2008 03:24 GMT I'm not "long-suffering" as John said, but I do feel some customer pain when reading about issues like importing clipart not working properly. Customer feedback in these newsgroups has really helped us investigate a variety of issues here and I'm hoping to help improve this experience for future versions of Office for Mac. :) The downloading .mpf file on a Leopard (OS 10.5.2) Mac (PPC and Intel-based) in Mac Safari has been found to occasionally reproduce and this is being investigated. Re-downloading the clipart should then download as a proper .cil file. If you consistenly get a .mpf file for re-downloading the same clipart in a Mac browser and/or find this occurring on Tiger (OS 10.4.11) Mac please let me know.

I know you have been on this issue for a while.
There are three issues:
1) The clipart database can corrupt. I think this has happened to you.
2) Some browsers take the extension off the file name that is downloaded (e.g. Firefox). If that happens, put the extension .cil back, or your Mac doesn't know what to do with the file.
3) Sometimes the website fails to detect that you are on a Mac and hands you the windows package instead. If the website offers you a .mpf file, cancel and refresh the web page. The Mac cannot decode a .mpf file and there is no way to make it do so.
To resolve issue 1, look for the clip gallery user database file in folder Microsoft Office 2004/Clipart/Clip Art
If it is there, move the content of the folder to a folder on your desktop.
Then look for the ~Microsoft Office 2008/Office/Media/Clipart/Personal folder, and move the content of that to a folder on your desktop.
