How can I update a table of contents in Word?

Processor: Power PC

I've created a table of contents in Word using Styles I made. All's worked fine. However now I want to add some more sections into my document and to have these appear in the Contents. Unfortunately although I can add them in using the styles etc they don't seem to appear in the Contents. Do I have to recreate a table of contents every time I add something or is there a simpler way to update it?

Sure is, Ella!

Key Command-a to select all of the document.

Hit the F9 key.

Click the "Update entire table" radio button => OK.

Voila!  Instant!

However, Mac OS X has hijacked the F9 button for Exposé, so this keyboard
shortcut is very likely not to work in Word unless the required
modifications have been made in System Preferences. You can also
ctrl-/right-click the TOC and choose Update Field from the contextual menu,
or, if you're more of a keyboard user, move the cursor into the TOC and hit
Cmd+Option+Shift+U.

Thanks, Michel -- I keep forgetting about that hijacking! (I altered the OS
keyboard shortcut so as to keep F9 for Word, which is why I forget).

Thanks very much for all the tips - they both work (I had altered the function keys hijacked for Expose.

Speaking of table of contents, Word consistently crashes when I try to update a table of contents in documents originally created on a Windows machine. Does anyone else have this problem? I hoped that version 12.1.0 would have solved this, but no luck.

Do you see this happen on a lot of different documents?  Because I'd
think it's document corruption---which an update is *highly* unlikely to
fix.

Try here:
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DocumentCorruption.html

If that doesn't fix it, please start a NEW thread and give full details.
Reactivating a two-month old thread with a similar but DIFFERENT problem
is not a good way to get the best help.

Sorry:  No detail always means "No Answer".

If you care to respond with details of all the software involved, then I can
tell you how to fix this.
