Can't print in Word X for Mac

Here are my specs:

Mac OS X 10.5.2
2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1 GB RAM
Microsoft Word X for Mac, Service Release 1

I can print from all programs (TextEdit, Acrobat, Preview, InDesign) but Word and other Office programs (Excel).

I've followed all the steps given here:

<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313553>

which include:

Install all available OS X updates (done)

Print a new document (didn't work)

Use another font (didn't work)

Print from another program (works)

Print from the Preview program (works)

Print from TextEdit (works)

Update the printer driver (have most recent)

Delete and add the printer (did; didn't work)

Print by using a Gimp-Print driver (not available)

Print to a different printer (didn't work)

Replace the printer preference files (didn't work)

I'm a copyeditor who virtually lives in Word, and I have to be able to print from it.

I could not use the OS X built-in Save As PDF function either. When I tried to save a PDF version of a new Word doc with just one line of 12-point Verdana to the Desktop, the PDF briefly appears, then quickly vanishes (less than one second). Searching for the filename turns up nothing.

Thanks for any help that anyone can give.

Hi Gregg -

Sounds basic - and may not help - but have you tried repairing disk
permissions & restarting your Mac?

This could also be related to some other 10.5.x printer issues between it &
how certain brands of printers handle Office requests for print services.

This is a nasty one.

As I told the people hit by this in 2008 a minute ago, we really have no
answer for this.

Print commands from certain print drivers simply don't work in OS 10.5.2.
Other kinds of printer and other kinds of printer drivers are working
perfectly.

I guess we can hope that Apple might put out a patch to fix this.

We must assume that Microsoft won't do anything for Office X: since Office X
is now out of support.  There is, of course, a very remote chance that if
Microsoft issues a fix for 2004, it will also work in Office X.  But it
would be very remiss of me to suggest that that is likely ‹ it is most
UN-likely.

To fix this, if you have Office X, your best course is either to roll your
OS back to OS 10.5.1 or earlier, or upgrade your version Office to 2004 or
later.

Hope this helps

I had /not/ repaired disk permissions. On Bob's recommendation, I did, and it fixed my problem -- this time.

I hope that doing this may help others.

Thanks again, Bob, for your help.
