Can I get rid of the document elements, quick tables, etc. menu line in print layout view?

So far I'm happy with Word for Mac 08, but one thing that bothers me is the extra menu line that appears in print layout view with buttons for doc elements, quick tables, charts, graphics, word art. I don't use these features, and would like as much writing space as possible on the screen (though I still want to display the std and formatting toolbars). I don't see a way to disable this new menu bar. My rule: if I don't use it, I don't want it on the screen.

There's no way to disable it, sorry.

But *do* use Help | Send Feedback in Word to ask for a preference to
hide it entirely. This one should be getting lots of votes.

> There's no way to disable it, sorry.
Dennis_Baron@officeformac.com - 12 Feb 2008 02:29 GMT
OK, I did what Daiya Mitchell suggested. Who knows, somebody might even listen.
Daiya Mitchell - 12 Feb 2008 04:00 GMT
They won't listen to you, but I'm hoping that the accumulation of
requests for this will make a difference. I figure we're up to at least
10 by now, and I think the theory is that for every person who makes a
request, there's a bunch who don't know how but have the same complaint.

Bill Weylock - 12 Feb 2008 23:02 GMT
Just logged on to ask the same question. Can¹t see Daiya¹s response, but I¹m
guessing she said to give them feedback. I will.

Is it okay to curse at them here before I do that? No one who actually uses
Word for something other than job advancement would add an extra .25² of
garbage at the top of an already bloated window. In their mad rush to
accessorize rather than improve, by 2010 I fully expect to have little
people and critters running around my page making suggestions for new color
effects and saying ³Did you really mean to do that?² ³Would you like help
writing an angry paragraph?²

Hi Bill:

"It looks like you are writing a suicide note: would you like help with
that?"

No, I really think they have learned their lesson with Clippy...

The real problem here is that we all completely misunderstood the Ribbon.  I
can remember standing in the middle of the conference room at Microsoft
Macintosh Business Unit in Redmond and stating categorically that the Ribbon
was the spawn of the Devil and Mac users would never use it.

That was before I had actually used it in production.

It took me two months to discover that I was wrong.  The Ribbon is not
perfect.  But there is a lot of very heavy-duty Human-Machine Interface
research and thought has gone into it, and as a user interface, it is
successful beyond anyone's wildest dreams.

I was wrong.  Mac user would use it.  Mac user would love it.  If they had
it.

Just...  Don't make it "orange" :-)

You can curse them as vigorously as you like.  But if you are going to, then
curse me too.  They DID ask "users".  We DID respond.  Very vigorously.  And
we were wrong...

Cheers

As Corentin says you can't turn it off completely but you can reduce it to
being only the buttons if you haven't already figured that one out: Click
the same button as the currently displayed Gallery items. For a more
permanent solution go to Word>Preferences> Personal Settings - Gallery &
clear the first check to open on launch.

I sent my feedback in regarding that extra annoying menu line.

I truly wish Mac Office would adopt the Ribbon interface used by Office 07. Yes, it is vastly different than the current Mac Office setup, and yes it would be daunting at first to have such a radical change - but it was a radical change for Windows Office users, as well, and in my experience has been far more usable than the current Office 08 interface. There is honestly no need at all for the two versions of Office to be so different from each other. I'm sure I am not the only one who uses both platforms, and I am constantly annoyed at how much there is missing from Office 08 in comparison.

You, Sir, are preaching to a fairly large choir of converted in here :-)

Please use the Send Feedback mechanism in the Help of any Office application
to send your thoughts directly to Microsoft :-)

I was under the impression that at at least MVP here would resign his
commission and go to work for Apple if such a request was taken
seriously. ;-)

Hi Phillip:

It's a "Thank-you letter".  Not a commission.  There's nothing to resign
"from" :-)  I can't even spit the dummy and storm out slamming the door.
There's no door to slam...

Yeah:  Well the more I see of the Office 2008 user interface, the more I
appreciate the Ribbon.  And I am not the only one who feels that way.

I may be the only MVP.  But I don't think so.

However, next time you're talking to him, you can tell Mr. Jobs not to
worry, he won't be seeing a job application from me any time 'soon'.

Cheers

I just searched this forum for this same question! One of the beauties of Word has always been the ability to customize menus. Elements Gallery looks like a nice feature, but I'll probably never use it. And I can't get rid of it? What's with that?

I'm sending in my comment, too.

More amazingly bad UI design from the MBU turd factory.

Must be something in the air in Redmond that makes people incapable of designing good interfaces.
John McGhie - 31 Mar 2008 10:04 GMT
I am not sure why you wanted to say that?

Did you think Microsoft would read your post?

Sorry: they don't read here.  Just us fellow-users.  If you have a message
for Microsoft, use Help>Send Feedback to make sure they read it.

That will save us having to wade through a heap of opinion in here while
trying to get or give help to other users.

Thanks
