Translation and a net connection

Out of interest I thought I'd try the translation function. This is a bit confusing. There are two - a bilingual dictionary and a translation facility that seems to work through the web. The dictionary works fine. The translation facility tells me 'Office cannot connect to the internet' and I need to be connected to the web to use it. I am, as the web search box beneath, which appears to be hooked to wikipedia, shows by looking up the search term. So does the translation work?
John McGhie - 17 Jan 2008 11:19 GMT
Yes, it works.  It needs plenty of bandwidth.

Make sure your default browser can reach  http://mso.worldlingo.com/

You should get a " Translate WorldLingo " page.

Cheers

I can access any web services with word and entourage (dictionary, web
search, ecc.) but the translation service: it tells me that I am not
connected to the Internet. Strange.

Keep watching for posts by Curt Laird, the Microsoft Software Engineer who
is currently working on this issue.

It seems to be caused by not having a proxy specified for the domain
mso.worldlingo.com

Stay tuned, there will be more information when he has it...

Hi Bob,
The Translation section of the Toolbox uses services provided by World Lingo
(www.worldlingo.com) to perform the translation. It¹s probable that the
service was down when you tried to access it, at least that would be my
first thought. If this isn¹t the case (i.e. It continues to be a problem)
let me know and I¹ll look into it further.

Thanks,

Curt

The service was and it is always working! Do not blame bugs within
Office 2008 to others! This translation service it is not working
inside Office!

Thanks.

Excuse me, but I didn't see John McGhie blame anyone or absolve anyone from
blame.  He also didn't say the translation service wasn't working.  He said
there appears to be a proxy issue and that MSFT is working on it.

Here (again) is what MSFT has said:

Sorry I did not intend to point fingers! The fact is that even the
work-around is not working. I appreciate all the efforts being made!

So you'll be really happy to hear that it actually DOES work for me :-)

And I DON'T have a proxy enabled.

I just answered your previous post: I believe the bug means that the Proxy
must exist, and that you need to set an "exception" for the address where
the translation service is.

So the proxy must exist, and do nothing, but there needs to be a specific
exception for the translation page.

Sorry:  As I said, it is a bug, and they are working on it.

I'm afraid I can't provide a solution, but after reading the op yesterday I
tried from a PC & had no problem accessing the site. Again just now I ran
translations in both French & Spanish with no hesitation or error.

I'm wondering if it might be something local to your system/browser/firewall
config or ISP?

This bug is not solved in the recent update!
Laura - 19 Mar 2008 07:32 GMT
Hi, has anyone found a solution yet? Mine won't connect to the internet either when I want to translate something.
John McGhie - 19 Mar 2008 11:24 GMT
Microsoft has found a solution, but we are still waiting for it to complete
testing and be issued in an update to "us" :-)

Sadly, it works for "some computers" via "some internet connections" and not
for others.  Shouldn't be much longer now...

Just bought first MAC and MACbook for home. No English to Spanish translation option in MAC WORD 2008 ...it's May 2, 2008. Any progress on the solution? Thanks.
John McGhie - 05 May 2008 03:54 GMT
Traduzca por favor esto al español.

Well, if you can read that, you will know it works.  Mind you, it always has
worked for me :-)

What happens when you try?

And please provide your Operating System version: that's critical.
Translation is an Internet service, how are you connecting to the Internet?

We need lots and lots of detail to hunt this one down for you.

Cheers
