Every time you launch Word, it creates a new document based on a template
called Normal. In other words, to make a permanent change, you will need to
modify that template itself. Here's a very quick tutorial on how to do this:
* Open Word and create a new document.
* Click on Format>Style.
* Make sure the Normal style is selected in the list in that new window,
then click on Modify in the lower right corner.
* In the new window, click on the "Format" dropdown button in the lower left
corner and choose Paragraphs.
* Click on the Line and Page Breaks tab, then deactivate Widow/Orphan
control.
* Click OK, and in the Modify Style window, tick the checkbox which reads
"Add to Template".
*Click on OK, then on Apply, then quit Word.
If you now relaunch Word, the Widow/Orphan setting should be turned off for
good.

Thank you very much, I shall go and follow your instructions to the
letter and thus be for ever free of the widows and orphans - I'd
better go make a donation to a suitable charity too, so that I don't
feel guilty about banishing them at Christmas. :-)
Seriously I am most grateful for your assistance.
SHaron.
