If I open the Word Help window, I cannot thereafter move or close it.
It remains on top of my current document. The only way I can get rid
of it is to quit word and start over or close any open documents and
then use command W to finally close the help window. If there is a
titlebar (the usual way to drag a window) or close box for the help
window, it is somehow not visible. Any sugesstions appreciated.

Yeah. Famous problem. Famous misfeature in Word.
Its title bar is jammed under the menu bar.
Google the group for how to fix it.

This same problem affects me every time I use Excel help. I finally learned
that if I change the display resolution to a different setting, the problem
goes away. I had my 22 inch display set to 1680 x 1050. At that setting I
could not close nor move the help window. I changed the display to 1600 x
1000 and now I can close or move the help window any time I want.

While running the display at reduced resolution, try dragging the help
window further away from the menu bar. You might find it remains
closable when you swap back to the higher resolution. You simply need
to convince it that its title bar is not jammed under the main menu
bar.
It should then stay sane across quits and restarts till the next time
it gets jammed underneath the menu bar. Brainless innit?
