I have a client who likes to do their projects with titles like
1794.6 (for the sixth one in that series of projects). They really would
like to have the files from Word sent to them 1794.6Title of Specific
article.doc
When I try to do that, if I have to make changes and the save it
again (even using save as..) I get a file saved that says 1794.doc.
Anyway I can go around that or should I just do like I did the
last time and go with 1794_6 etc.

I can't answer that question unless you tell me which version of Word you
are using and on which operating system.
A period has a special meaning in a file name on any file system. If you
use one to mean anything other than "the extension starts here" you should
expect trouble, and you'll often get it.
It might be worth explaining that to the client: there are ways you can bend
the rules in almost every system, but doing so in business is never a smart
idea I comes back to bite you at the least opportune moment :-) An
underscore is far safer :-)

In a brief test here I had no difficulty with what you're attempting [OS X
10.4.10, Office 11.3.7].
However, I agree whole-heartedly with John - that type of file naming is a
disaster begging for an opportunity materialize... And will *create* such an
opportunity rather than waiting for it to arrive.
