Hi Bob,
first of all, thank you for your prompt response.
In answer to your questions, here are the details you sought:

3) My computer is a Power Mac G5 'Tower' with the following Hardware

Bus Speed: 900 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.1.5f2
Serial Number: YM340BPGPGB
4) The keyboard is a stock Apple keyboard that came with the

OK, this information helps eliminate a few possibilities:) & you've done a
good job of describing what _doesn't_ happen, but you still haven't
described what _does_ happen when pressing each of those keys.
If no text is selected the 'delete'

key should obviously delete one character to the left, whereas the 'del' key
(nav group) should delete one character to the right. (I'm sure you're aware
of this, I'm just kinda thinking out loud.)
If text _is_ selected either of the two should delete the selected text.
Does the text remain selected or does the highlighting disappear & the
insertion point move to one end of the previously selected text?
Do you have any programs installed that in some way modify keyboard
operation or act as "helpers" or provide utility operations?
Try launching Word while pressing the Shift key & see if the behavior
persists.

Hi Bob,
thanks for your suggestion.
I have tried launching Word 2004 while pressing the Shift key, as you
suggested, and both the "delete" key on the mayn section of the
keyboard and the "delete" key in the navigation section have
performed their function as expected.
Hopefully, this will be the end of the annoyance experienced so far.
Thank again for your kind assistance.
Regards,

Hate to burst your bubble, but that isn't a *fix* - it's just a
troubleshooting step:-) The shift key starts Word without allowing any
macros or add-ins to load... But it also disables any customizations &
certain other features.
Now you need to determine what it is that *is* loading when you start Word
_without_ using the Shift key. Re-read the end of my previous post & try to
identify what it may be. Once you disable/uninstall the culprit you should
be able to start Word normally without problems.
