Hey Bob, My concern isn't the "number of characters" or "capacity" of
the text field...
Apparently, my client isn't technical enough to know that they can TAB
through the different fields in the multi-page form. What's happening
is when they place their cursor (insertion point) over an Answer field
- unless they hit the small shaded field exactly the cursor is
"pushed" (for lack of a better word) to the next field in the form. I
wish I could upload a picture but here's what is happening...
1. Question: How can I expand the shaded box in answer area below?
Answer: _**Shaded Box**____________X_______
If you place your cursor at the "X" in the above example - the cursor
jumps (or is pushed) to the next form field.
So, I want to have:
Answer: ****************Shaded Box*********************
And yes, the shaded box will be invisible. So, the end viewer will
just see...

OK - That gives me a clearer picture :) The first thing that comes to mind
is the word "training", but that isn't always the answer, I guess:)
Next in line would be:
A- Use the Default Text field property to mark the "click points" with
something obvious such as CLICK HERE, or
B- Use FILLIN fields which prompt the user for info to be typed into a
prompt & deposits it in the *right* spot, or
C- Instead of text box form fields use MACROBUTTON No Macro fields - the
problem with this is that the doc can't be protected, so any of the fields
on the Forms toolbar can't easily be used.
You might have a look here for more detailed information [if using Safari
you may need to click the Reload button once or twice].

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, Bob.
I think what I'm going to do is to use the 'prompt' suggestion. Only
because, I'm designing and building the form(s) template then handing
off to the end client so that they can update the form(s) when needed.
Although, the Fill-in fields + macrobutton may be more effective for
designer/developers - I think they're too involved for a general Word
"user".
Lastly, I think it would be a nice feature to be able to simply 'draw'
a rectangle as a form text field and style it (similar to what can be
done in Adobe Acrobat Pro). I only mention that in case a developer
see's this post, get's inspired and develops a third party plug-in -
that I'd buy (for a reasonable amount) :-)
