Mac Forum / Applications / Word / May 2007Can't save anywhere...!!!
Hi all: First post here... I believe my Word app may be at fault and in need of reinstalling but I ask the experts here before I do that. My Word 2004 for Mac opens from the dock, I can write a new doc but when clicking to save as...beach ball goes round and round forever...obviously I force quit. I can't open some docs either...same thing happens the program hangs... Anyone care to venture an idea...??? Thanks in advance... Reinstalling is rarely the first step to correct problems on a Mac and can even complicate matters further - glad you posted here before doing so:) Several suggestions starting from the top since you don't mention versions of Office or OS X. Perform the following in the order listed: 1- Get the current Combined Update for your breed of Mac & OS X from the Apple web site - either 10.3.9 or 10.4.9, PPC or Intel - and apply it. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ 2- Run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions after step one. 3- Install the 11.3.5 Office update (again if necessary), run Repair Disk Permissions once more. If this doesn't fix the problem tell us more about the type of Mac you have, whether this is a new development in a previously error-free setup, what else may have [been] changed recently, etc. Or is this a new installation of Office? Any similar problems with other programs? OK, I do have all the latest updates for OSX and Office (10.4.9 and 11.3.5) I did Repair Disk Permissions, and it did not resolve the issue. I restarted after repair and still no solution...!!! I can open Word. Open a blank document. Write on it but the moment I click Save or Save As I get the beach ball from "hell". Same when I try to open a Word doc from anywhere except the most recent files from the File drop down menu. Even then, I can't save any doc I open. Both Power Point and Exel have no issues and are working fine... This has been a totally trouble free 17 month old 14" 80GB ibook G4 (PPC) running OSX 10.4.9 What should I try next? Always helpful to know as much as you can about the situation since there's no peeky-feely from this end :) Especially if you updated OS X using the Software Update version I would still suggest that you get the 10.4.9 Combination update from the link I gave you, apply that, then run a disk permissions repair. If still no joy, start up from your OS X install disk (or alternate startup volume) then go to the Utilities menu & launch Disk Utility. Select your startup volume from the left list and click the Repair Disk (*not* Permissions this time) button. You may have to run it several times until no errors are found. Alternatively you may prefer to use Disk Warrior if you have it. After you restart from your HD repair _permissions_ again. This still may not be the final fix, but at least we'll level the playing field. If more is necessary it wouldn't help until were confident the OS is up to snuff. Post back with your results.
