Field codes in Word 2003

We have two users to the same machine.  For one user (administrator) field
codes work fine, but if the other user tries to insert autotext (filename and
path) all that's displayed are the field codes.  Toggle field codes switches
between curly brackets etc or filename/p between empty boxes.  Within a
header trying to Insert filename and path also displays filename/p between
empty boxes but there is no toggle field codes option.

They're not "really" field codes.  The user may not have understood how to
put them in.  Delete what they have and use Insert>Field... from the menu to
re-insert them.

Cheers

Afraid not!  I've logged into this machine both as me (administrator) and as
the user.  When I log in as me it works fine, when I log in as the user it
doesn't, and the codes were entered in the same way on both occasions!  But
thanks for the suggestion.

The obvious questions:
does it only happen for this user?
does it only happen on this machine?

In any case I would probably follow

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

even though it doesn't describe the specific problem you are seeing.

(NB, you're in a /Mac/ Word group here...)

OK, NOW I'm confused :-)

The AutoText one is easy: hopefully you have separate Normal templates for
Administrator and User (you better have!!) so any given autotext that may be
present in the Normal template for one user will come up blank (not found)
in the other.

However:  Filename is a special case: that is present in any default
Template (it's a built-in).  So if you replace the user's Normal template,
the Filename autotext should appear.  (I never bother: there's no need for
an AutoText for that, I just insert the Filename field directly).

Of course, the document must have been saved or the file name itself won't
exist.  The fact that { Filename /p } is being displayed indicates that the
document is showing field CODES not field RESULTS.  But if the field then
becomes blank when you toggle field codes OFF, that indicates that the file
name is not populated.  This document HAS been saved, right?

My problem is that I am sure you have already tried both those solutions :-)

<Clutching desperately at straws here> Has the document been anywhere near a
PC version of Word that has "Remove personally identifiable information from
the file on save" set to ON?  If so, various fields will be populated with
blank results.  But Filename is NOT one of them...

I really don't have a clue...

Sorry!
