Some tools didn't install

I bought Office 2004 Student Edition last year. It comes with three
installs. The first I put on my G-5 iBook running Tiger, no problems.
The second install I put on my daughter's Intel-chip MacBook running
10.4.9. It seemed to install okay, but we noticed that spell check
doesn't work, nor does grammar or thesaurus. I've tried everything,
but no luck.

I'm new to this usenet group, so I don't know if it's kosher to ask
that you e-mail any suggestions to frontrangewriter@comcast.net. If
not, I'll look for feedback here. Thanks.

PS. The laptop came with Office test drive, which I put in the trash
but did not delete before intstalling the Office 2004. I had never
opened the test drive before putting it in the trash.

The test drive is an evil piece of ineptitude, which coupled with
Microsoft's messy installer with its cavalier attitude to spraying
stuff all over your machine without asking permission, it has probably
left little puppy puddles all over the place.

Since your daughter is a respected developer on Apple's exclusive beta
test program for the as yet unreleased but imminent 10.4.9, she'd have
no trouble emptying trash, fixing permissions, rebooting, running the
Microsoft Office uninstaller, fixing permissions, rebooting and then
re-installing Office from scratch.

Normally, re-installation does nothing useful, but in this case (it
came within 50 miles of test drive) it won't hurt. Since it is a brand
new machine, there will be nothing to lose by trashing normal and
preferences before you cast the magic spells to exorcise the test drive
and the current installation.

It is with some sadness that I cannot say "follow the usual Macintosh
uninstallation procedure - trash the application" This *is* Microsoft
we are talking about here.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. And please forgive an unfortuante typo:
no, my (17-year-old) daughter is not a developer for Apple with a beta
version 10.4.9. Her father is merely a bad typist, especially at the
upper regions of the keyboard.

Heh! I thought I'd have a bit of fun with you. The rumour factories are
claiming it may be no more than a week away, which is what triggered my
smart remark. I went over to check I hadn't missed the update
announcement before coming back here to write smart aleck stuff.

PS. What Daiya said is good. I'd picked up too early on the recent
installation part of your story, and I forgot how sensible it is to
follow the Daiya line of troubleshooting first. There *are* a lot of
ways to accidentally trick the spell checker to go into a sulk.

Hi Buzz,

The test drive may be an issue, but I'm willing to bet that the spelling
tools are installed fine, but probably that for some reason the text is
not properly tagged as English, which is required for spellcheck,
grammar, and thesaurus to work. I don't know what you mean when you say
you have tried everything, but there are some fixes for language issues
listed here that may be worth trying:
