Using Office 2001, in Microsoft Word, when the pallette is shown, and
the Font arrow is selected and the Font menu is brought down, there is a
section on top for the name of the Font that is in use.  This is handy
because you don't have to continually go down through the Fonts to find
the one that you are using.  Is it possible to group selection of fonts
being used for a document into this framework to eliminate going through
all of them to find a particular font?

And then, when you are through with them, how can they be removed from
this grouping?

No, that can't be done. If you use Mac OS X, you can use Font Book to
disable fonts so they don't show up in font lists like the one in Microsoft
Word. I'm not sure how to disable fonts in Mac OS 9 as I've never really
used that OS. If you use OS 9, you should wait for someone else to come
along and give you detailed instructions. Note that by disabling fonts, you
won't be able to use them in other applications, either, so I'm not really
sure if that will help in your situation.

As I recall, the font lists have always presented fonts in A-Z order with no
provision for 'grouping' otherwise offered by any version of the OS or most
applications. If you need this type of capability you might explore some of
the font management programs that provide features for organizing your
fonts. My experience, though, is that unless you do a great deal of work
with a very large number of fonts, such software probably requires more
expense & time than the typical user might be willing to invest.

Hopefully you've noticed that Word records the fonts you've most
recently/frequently used at the top of the font list on both the Formatting
toolbar & Formatting Palette. Hopefully that can help, but the best thing
for most folks is to purge your system of any fonts not really needed by
you, your software or the OS... Surprising how easy it is to find a font in
the list if there aren't 50+ there in the first place :)

And if you use styles to format your document, you don't have to go near the
font menu unless you have out-of-the-ordinary requirements for font variety
(e.g. using Word in lieu of page layout software).
