Caption Numbers Not Incrementing

I am inserting captions into a large (150 page) document.  After
inserting the first two captions, the "counter" stops incrementing and
labels all the captions as "1" (one).  Does anyone know how I can fix
this problem?

Have you tried manually updating the caption fields? They can be a little
testy since they are one type of field that doesn't update automatically. If
that doesn't do it take a look at the following info. It may help determine
why, although manual updating is a part of each solution:

>Captions aren't numbered correctly
>If you edited, deleted, or moved captions.

>If you grouped a caption with a floating object.
>Ungroup the caption and the object and then manually update the captions.

I didn't "edit, delete, or move captions."  I just used the "Insert
Caption" command to generate the captions.  An important detail I didn't
include in my original message: I am running a G5 iMac with OS X.10.7
and MS Word 2004 for Mac, version 11.2.

I tried your suggestion several times by manually updating one or two of
the captions by selecting it, then doing a "control-click," which gave
me the shortcut menu.  I selected "Update Field," but the caption number
remained at "1" (one).  I am also using a page numbering scheme that
causes the page numbers to be A-1, A-2, A-3, etc., since I am editing an
Appendix.  The captions are also numbered likewise (A-1, A-2, etc.), but
after A-2, all of them are numbered A-1.

If you have any further suggestions, I would be eternally grateful.

Hi Frank:

A Caption is just a "SEQ" field with a label of "Caption".  Reveal the field
codes and make sure that the ones that are not numbering correctly have the
correct label "Caption" and do NOT have the \s switch.

For more see "Field codes: SEQ (Sequence) field" in the Word help.

Cheers
