Re-numbering footnotes

I received a document into which an insert had been placed.  The
original document had footnotes and the insert had footnotes.  For some
reason the document will not re-number the footnotes.  They start from
1-52 then the insert comes in at 38-48 and then re-numbers again at the
end of the insert.  Can anyone tell me how to re-number the footnotes
or correct the numbering problem?

Thanks

Just a wild guess. Is the "insert" its own section?
If so, hit help with "restart note numbers"
It suggests that you go to insert » footnote... » options...
you will get to note options, which seems to have some relevant things
for you to play with to fix what you are seeing.

I have not tested this WAG [1]. Do report back if it was helpful.

1. Wild arsed guess.

If the numbers go

1-52
38-48 for a certain section
1-xx again

Then I would bet Elliott's guess is right.

If you are Tracking Changes, footnote numbers go all wiggy, but will sort
themselves out once all the Changes have been Accepted.

If neither of those are the issue, please give Word version number and more
detail about the document.
