Word hangs when updating fields

Using Microsoft Word 2004 for MAC.

My document includes several figures that are labeled with figure
captions (captions created using the "caption" feature).

When I try to update the table of figures, and select the "update
entire table" option (rather than just updating page numbers), Word
hangs with the message that it's repaginating atthe figure page where
it finds a figure caption.  I have to force-quit Word.

If I accept the changes in all of the figure captions, it seems to work
OK (most of the time - this could be a red herring - but it's the only
work around that I've found to work at all, and even it doesn't work
all the time).  But, that's not an option for the long-term solution
for this document since Word always "changes" the figure numbers in the
document everything I "select all" and update fields even if the figure
numbers really didn't change.  So, I have to go through the entire
document and accept the "changes" in the figure captions before
updating the document fields again.  And then it still hangs sometimes.

What would cause Word to hang when trying to update fields?

The Tracked Changes!

Don't leave tracked changes in a document: accept (or reject...) them all,
then turn Change Tracking OFF before updating the fields.

I suspect that the particular field is corrupt.  I suggest that you delete
it and re-insert it.

Cheers
