.dll is a Windows extension and you posted your question to a Macintosh
newsgroup.  You'll need to find a more appropriate group and try again.

Your computer is missing a few components -- or the file you are trying to
open is trashed.

What is happening is that you are attempting to open a document with
WordPad.  WordPad is an expanded version of Windows Write, which comes with
your operating system.

The file you are trying to open happens to be a Microsoft Word ".doc" file,
so WordPad is calling a converter to change it to a format it can handle.

That converter is named msconv97.dll.  It is a piece of Office 97.
kernel32.dll is the "engine" of Windows, the core of your operating system.
So WordPad is opening the converter, the converter tries to handle the file,
doesn't like what it finds, and sends a call to Windows to see if it has any
better ideas.

It doesn't, and it shoots the messenger for asking rude questions :-)

Can you do anything about it?  Probably not.  Chances are the file you are
trying to open is produced by a version of Word that is too modern for your
system to handle.  Have you recently run Windows Update?  If not, try that.

Otherwise, I am afraid you need to either update your software or give up on
that file.

It is possible that a complete version of Microsoft Office 2003 will be able
to get that file open.  Since there's a new version coming out soon, you may
be able to buy it at a discount.

However:  If you have run Windows Update and you still get the error, there
is only a very small chance that you will be able to open that file with the
full version of Word.

I can think of many reasons that you might want the full version of
Microsoft Office.  However, it's an expensive solution if all you wanted to
do was open one bad file :-)
