Since the two other posts here about this BUG have been closed I need
to start another post on this Microsoft problem.
Using OS 10.3.9 or 10.4.6 on Mac clients and OS Server 10.4.6, Office
10 or Office 2004.
The problem:
Open a file on the server and then close it. The modified date in the
Finder gets changed to that new date and time. Word never asks to save
the file. No changes were ever made. This will not happen if you are
the owner of the file.
It only happens if you belong to the Group that has R/W access to the
file. This never happened in Server 10.3.9.
I called Apple Enterprise Support and spent about an hour on the phone
while they checked into this. they confirmed it is a bug in MS Office
and that MS is aware of it. Apparently from Server 10.3.9 to 10.4 a
security item was fixed and the way Office flags modified files is now
tripped up by this.

I find the one above intersting because it was from a year ago and
Jeffrey Weston in the Macintosh Business Unit reproduce your problem in
their lab.

Quote:
"We've managed to reproduce your problem in our lab.
We're in contact and working with Apple on it.  Unfortunatly, I can't
recommend any solution or workaround to your problem, at this point.
If
something comes up I'll post back.
But thanks agian for the great investigative work, it really helped! "

Here is the other Post:

Hope this helps.

Hi Mike:

Yep:  I think that's it.  There is another post somewhere that I can't find
right now.  If I remember correctly, Apple played around with the file
locking bitmask in the server protocol and now it doesn't work right under
certain circumstances.

But I am having a little trouble with your analysis here:

It seems to me that:

1)  It used to work

2)  Apple changed something

3)  Now it doesn't work

4)  Microsoft made no change

5)  This is obviously Microsoft's fault!

If you want to take kicks at Microsoft, I can recommend some much more
fertile sources of amusement.  But your logic on this one seems a little
shaky :-)

Cheers
