Hi,
I am back again, stumped. I am continuing now my project w/o using the
Master document feature and have divided the document in chapters, each with
its own filename. The graphics are deposited in a separate file for each
chapter. This worked fine with the first chapter, the file size after the
manipulation went down dramatically to text file size only. What stumps me
is my inability to repeat this feat with chapter 2. No links are created by
going this: At the insertion point in the new document I call up Insert>As
Object, select as Word Picture, then >From file>location>filename of
picture, then checking boxes ³link to file² and ³insert icon², Then hit
insert.
When checking Edit>Links, Links is greyed.
What have I forgotten going from one documentto the next? I feel utterly
dumb.

Probably just because it¹s new to you, but by chapter 300 you¹ll undoubtedly
have it down pat :) I think what you want is Insert>*Picture*>From File,
not Insert>*Object*.

Thank You Bob, for your quick answer. You are certainly right. You start
with Insert Picture¹,then FromFile¹and after you found the file of the
picture you need to check the box Link to File¹ and uncheck the box Save
with Document¹. This keeps the graphics in the document while editing but
leaves the graphics out when saving and the Word file remains quite small.
Logical, of course!
It¹s tough getting old.
