Whenever I edit a Word document created on a Wintel PC I always get the
little red tool box icon flashing and then when I run the compatibility
report I always get the note saying "English(US) proofing tools are not
installed." I have the student/teacher version of Office 2004(mac).
I've tried to install them from my CD but i've apparently not been
successful. Any ideas and what to do in order to stop seeing this
compatibility issue.

Student/teacher is the same as the regular version except for the price.

I don;t quite see how proofing tools can be a compatibility issue...
In any case, you can easely check what proffing tools are actually
installed. In the MS Office 2004 folder, check the /Shared
Applications/Proofing Tools folder. You should see there :
English (US) Word Forms
English Grammar
English Grammar Dictionary
English Hyphenation
English Spelling
English Thesaurus
US English Hyph Dictionary
US English Spelling Dictionary
US English Thesaurus
