Steelhead - 09 Mar 2006 14:47 GMT Helpppp. I just upgraded my Mac OS 9.2 to OSX. For some reason, my Word 98 keeps repeating lettersssss for no apppppparent reasonnnn, not with any pattern, nor does it seeeeem to be due to my depressing the key toooo long. Any suggestions? Thanks ::::Steelhead
CyberTaz - 09 Mar 2006 15:35 GMT Hi Steelhead -
The first thing I'd check is AppleMenu>System Preferences>Keyboard & Mouse to see if the kybd settings might be off & adjust as necessary. (If you have a 3rd party kybd it may have its own Control Panel.)
If that isn't the fix it could be that your kybd is simply on the fritz, but I'm sure the switch to OS X is purely coincidental timing.

It only happens in Word98 and only when I'm running OS X. If I launch with OS 9.2, which I kept on my hard drive, Word98 runs fine, just as it always has. Switching back and forth between OS's isn't the handiest practice, but better than the frustration of trying to use Word98 in OS X. Let's hope someone comes up with a better solution. Roz
CyberTaz - 10 Mar 2006 17:49 GMT Hi Folks -
I sincerely don't mean to sound insensitive to your problem, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a "better solution". Keep in mind that you are using a version of Word 4 generations removed from the current one in an OS for which it was not written by way of a less than perfect 'emulator' called Classic. I have searched this group back to 2002 & found no reference to a similar problem.
It may not be what you would prefer to hear, but, IMHO, the most feasible solution would be to upgrade to Word 2004 while you can still do so at a reduced price. If that is out of the question for some reason;
Make sure that OS X is fully updated with permissions repaired, etc., Reinstall & fully update to OS 9.2.*2* - earlier revisions don't play nice in Classic, & Uninstall/Reinstall & fully update Word 98
If you do all the above "by the book", it _may_ resolve the problem. Also, you may find more info available through the Apple Discussions forum:

So much has happened in 7 years to the Mac OS not only the switch to a totally different operating system. Too much for Word 98 in this respect.

It has been a while!
Actually, Word 98, itself, would _probably_ be Ok in a fully updated & 'pure' 9.2.2/Classic mode, its just that so many OS 9 users have innocently inundated & complicated their OS with such an array of extensions, etc. that cause it to languish & behave erratically.
Unfortunately, however, I fear I may have offended the OPs, as neither has bothered to post so much as a rebuttal. But, what can I say... Sometimes the truth is a bitter pill to swallow!

Agreed; all that about OS 9 comes rushing back to me ... and I was a late adopter (not from fear, just from wanting to see the emperor's clothes; I waited till OS X was shaken down sufficiently = Panther).

Probably not; but I would have thought with your [highly valued] experience on this NG you would have got used to speaking to the Great Silence in relation to so many posters. Which makes it so much more appreciated when someone posts back, non?

Exactly the impression I got from our Welsh springer spaniel, Griff, last night (he is now subject to a truth-in-advertising claim, because at 12 years he doesn't spring any more). Anyway, he did *not* like these latest pills ...

:-) Actually, I made some of that up... You guess which bit...

Clive Huggan - 15 Mar 2006 09:06 GMT I, um, only go there for sociological research ;-)
I think it was a reply to a cross-post (actually, that sounds as lame as the above!)
I used to go there quite often, but since Word 2003's idiosyncrasies were so "inventive" compared with previous Windows versions of Word, and since my elder son "borrowed" my PC laptop to run it off a Honda generator at a minesite in the South Pacific hence I'm getting out of date the occasions are somewhat rare now ...
However, since I'm going to wait till the MacIntel configuration has settled down, but there are good tax deductibility opportunities with laptops in Australia, my next computer will be a PC laptop.
<Thinks: That will draw the crabs>
