A little more detail about the problem might help us guess.  What exactly do
you do, what do you expect to happen, and what happens instead?

What version of Office and OS ?

Wild guess 1--try repairing permissions (use Disk Utility, in Applications)

Wild guess 2--select a Word file, do cmd-I to Get Info, and reset the Open
With setting in the resulting dialog to the correct Word application,
selecting Change All.  [Since I'm just imagining what your problem is, no
idea whether this fix will help]
