Word 2004 Organization Chart - Alignment Issues

Hi there-

I'm using Mac Office 2004 (all updates applied) on a PowerBook 17" running
OS X 10.4.5.

I'm trying to create and organizational chart using Word.  The chart I'm
trying to create is fairly simple and the handy Organization Chart tool
*seems* to be doing the job very well.  All fonts, spacing, alignment, and
reporting relationships appear normal when I edit the chart in the
Organization Chart tool.

However, if I close the Organization Chart tool, the resulting org chart in
the document contains several problems:

- Text that appears centered in the Organization Chart tool is rendered
off-center (shifted to the right) with text truncation.
- Spacing between subordinates at the same organization level is
inconsistent.
- Box sizes in general appear to have been compressed around the text.

Has anyone else had some success using this tool?  Are there any tips that I
should be aware of?

Thanks in advance.

Hmmm... Working OK here.  Try renaming your Normal Template: that can fix
errors where Word has stored inappropriate settings such as font sizes and
indent levels.  But I was not aware that Org Chart stored anything in there.

I think one "limitation" of this applet is that the organisation chart must
fit in the space available on the page when you're done.  Org Chart will
continue to shrink boxes and text until it gets to the point where it can't
shrink any more.

If your space is too small, I think you need to organise a larger piece of
paper.

It appears not to resize correctly around boxes that contain NO text.

But other than that, it works OK for me.  I only use it for very simple Org
charts: anything large requires a real graphics application :-)

Cheers

John-

Thanks for the tips.  I'll give them a try.

Before I do, however, could you clarify what you mean by renaming the Normal
Template?  Do I, through the finder for example, simply rename the file?
Will Word create a new Normal.dot automatically?  Just want to be sure I
understood this particular tip.

Peace,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Yes, that's exactly correct.  Just make sure that you quit out of Word
first.  After renaming Normal, relaunch Word which will then create a new
"virgin" Normal.  Open a new document and see if the problem is gone.  If
not, you can restore your original Normal by renaming it back.  If the
problem *is* gone, then your original Normal was corrupt.

If you had customized your original Normal, you can transfer many of those
customizations to the new Normal using Organizer.  Otherwise just trash the
renamed file.  Much more here:

Chris:

If renaming Normal doesn't bring it right (and I suspect it won't) you will
need this one:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm

Sorry:  It's a lot of work...

Although that article tells you you will turn into a pillar of salt
instantly unless you perform the steps in sequence (and usually, you
will...) in this case, you could try this procedure first:

http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/DamagedPrefs.htm

If that doesn't fix it, you need to start again from the top, and re-perform
that procedure when you get to it :-)

Hope this helps
