When I press save/save as the window opens down from the menu bar.  I'm
new to mac and I couldn't figure out why I didn't have a place to write
the name of the file I want to save.  I looked in help and it
instructed to write the name of the file.  I couldn't understand why
there wasn't any place for me to write the name.  I discovered that the
spot where I type in the name was hidden by the toolbars.  I usually
only use the standard and format toolbar but have to move them to be
able to place the name of the document.  Is there any way I can avoid
this extra step?  Sometimes the save button at the bottom is almost
hidden at the bottom and when I want to press it the button gets hidden
by the program menu that pops up.  Can I short up the save dialog box?
Any insight into this is appreciated.

If you have the toolbars 'docked', that shouldn't be happening, although
there could be another issue to address. First, though, look at the left end
of the toolbars & you will see a narrow vertical bar with a circular button
at the top of it. (The button is for 'closing' the toolbar, or turning it
off.)

Use that vertical bar (not the little button) to drag the toolbar toward the
Menu Bar until it 'snaps' into place, then drag the other one up to 'snap'
to the bottom edge of the first.

The Save As dialog box File Name field should not be covered up when you
open it once this is done. If it continues to be a problem, post back to let
someone know.

As far as the size of the Save As dialog box, you can use the diagonal
'gripper' at the lower left corner for resizing purposes - although it isn't
as fluidly adjustable as most sizeable windows. When you refer to the
'program menu that pops up', I assume you mean the Dock which is also
something that can be modified through your System Preferences (Apple Menu).

I am able to resize the dock icons but the save/save as dialog box
extends down to the bottom of my screen and the dock often pops up.  I
did resize the icons but it still occurs...this isn't as much an issue
as the file name being hidden.  I can drag the vertical bars and even
elongate them but, both the standard and format toolbar won't fit on
the same line.  When one is below the other the file name box is
hidden.  I just can't find any option to work around this.

You've probably read John's post which just about tells the tale.

One last desperate compromise - try going into System Preferences>Dock &
remove the check to "Automatically Hide & Show the Dock". It should prevent
the Word window from extending any further down than the Dock's top edge.

You might also reposition one of the toolbars as Vertical & try to get used
to leaving it like that.

You could also shorten the standard and formatting toolbars by removing
icons you never use, then they might fit on one line.

However, I don't get John's answer. Yes, with a small screen the Save dialog
might trigger the Dock. But I think John might not have noticed the part
about the hidden filename box.

The file name box should *never* be hidden, because it comes down from the
bottom of the titlebar of the document, so it should be not more than one
inch lower than the titlebar of the document (the filename box is always at
the top of the Save dialog).  *If a toolbar covers the titlebar of the
document, then your toolbars are not properly docked.*  Once the toolbars
are properly docked, then the titlebar will automatically sit lower than the
toolbars (not covered by the toolbars).

By filename box, I assume you mean the "Save As: [empty box]" at the top of
the dialog (just making sure).

By titlebar, I mean the top of the document window, the part that shows the
filename and the close/shrink/maximize (red/yellow/green) buttons.

To dock the toolbars, drag the thing at the left end and float it around
until it seems to sink into place (the "sweet spot") right under the upper
toolbar.  My default has a little gap between the top of the titlebar and
the bottom of the toolbar, so don't try to move the titlebar right up to the
bottom.

I know CyberTaz already told you to dock the toolbars--try it again, or ask
if you don't understand what we mean, because I simply can't see any way
this isn't causing the problem of the hidden filename box in the save
dialog. His instructions were better than mine, you might go back to that
post.

Hi Daiya:

I noticed the complaint about the hidden file name box, but I wasn't sure
how he produced it.

I can reproduce it here by "undocking" the DOCUMENT.  If I do, and then
slide the top of the document up behind the toolbars, the file name field is
hidden, and so is the document so he would not have been able to get things
back into place.  The File Save As dialog appears to be opened relative to
the top of the document, not the bottom of the toolbars.

Cheers

Hi John,

absolutely, the Save dialog is relative to the top of the document--but if
the toolbars are in the right place, Word will automatically move the
document out of their way--e.g., I hid a doc under the toolbar but on
close/reopen it fixed itself.

I couldn't find a sweet spot for my document, so I figured fixing the
toolbar location was the way to approach this.

Hi Tim:

Sorry, you need a bigger screen :-)

I have the same problem on this iBook.  There's no way round it: if your
screen is too small to show the things you want to look at, it's too small.
Period.

You can, of course, reposition the Dock to the side of the screen (which is
where I keep it).  It's just as offensive there, but it will interfere with
"different" things.

You have already tried resizing the dock icons.

The Save As dialog you are seeing is not part of Word -- it's actually a Mac
OS X Finder window that is being called by Word.  I assume that you have
dragged the bottom right corner to get it as small as possible.  There's a
limit to how far OS X will allow you to shrink that window.

Sorry...
