for some reason last night my keyboard changed in some way so that all
of the regular ways to get a question mark, exclamation point, etc are
new keys and combinations.  Shift + the question mark key gives me
this: Ç.  all of the Shift combinations are now different, and all
give me a new character, while the old characters have been moved to
other arbitrary keys that i am still trying to figure out.  why is this
happening and how can i get my keyboard back to normal?  thanks.

check system prefs » International » Input Menu are as you expect them
to be. It is a good idea to check the button called "show input menu in
menu bar" since inadvertently typing cmd-space sort-of cycles through
your selected keyboard layouts ofr different languages. My guess is
that you have a Spanish keyboard selected.

ah, perfect.  thanks so much elliott.  that was the problem.  i must
have hit the command to switch it to spanish by accident.  i put the
language in the menu bar to avoid this confusion in future.  thanks
again

Thanks, Elliott!  I have been wondering for ages why mine randomly changes
in Word.
