I need to access the Format>Document menu option (to change line
numbering), but it's disappeared. The only options are Font and
Paragraph. Does anyone know where Document went?

Thanks,
Conlan

Never mind. I got it back by resetting the tool bar, as suggested in a
previous thread. But does anyone know how it could have disappeared in
the first place?

There has recently been a rash of this being discussed here. I put it
down to Word flu.
Maybe there is a secret default keystroke combo waiting for us hapless
noobs to mistype?
I lost one menu item a while ago, and I'm sure I did nothing to provoke
it, but then I'm always mucking about trying to remember what daft
combo I assigned to an even dafter macro I'd almost forgotten about.

The lurking keystroke is Command + Option + minus.

Hit that, and the next menu item you choose will be deleted!  It's the
"Remove item from menu" command...

Cheers

Problem is: In OS 10.3 onwards, you'll also find that this keyboard shortcut
doesn¹t work.

Go to System Preferences => Keyboard and mouse => Keyboard shortcuts =>
Universal Access => de-select the Zoom Out tickbox (or if you want to have a
keyboard shortcut for that command, assign another combination for Zoom
Out).

For work-arounds for other well-used Office keyboard shortcuts recently
h*jacked by OSX, see pages 21, 104 and 105 of some notes on the way I use
Word for the Mac, titled "Bend Word to Your Will", which are available as a
free download from the Word MVPs' website
(http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/Bend/BendWord.htm).

[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]

Command + Option + minus is the command to remove an item from the *Work*
menu, not from *any* menu.

It works for any menu. The next thing you click on is gone.

I think the official name is actually ToolsCustomizeRemoveMenuShortcut.

Well, THAT'S a pain in the butt!  How nasty of the Word Help not to mention
that little fact in the bit about removing items from the Work menu.

This problem has created its very own FAQ in WinWord.

Scroll down to "how you lost it" on this page, if interested:
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/LostSymbol.htm

I've not actually double-checked to ensure MacWord works the same way, but I
would expect it to.
