Hi All,

Since downloading Mac Office 2004 onto my iBook +OSX I cannot set the
default language in Tools. My preferred language is English UK; I click
this as well as indicating that this selection should be the default
option of Word from now on.

Yet, if I open a new page or close it down and reopen Word my language
selection is removed and I have to go through the process all over
again: my default preference is not being recorded.

This is having knock on problem; my spell check - since it has not been
told what language to check in - does not function at all.

I have downloaded the latest updates from MS but to no avail. Help is
dearly needed as this glitch, however small, is extremely frustrating.

The default option only applies to new documents based on the Normal
template (cmd-N, but *not* generally the stuff available through File |
Project Gallery), and does not apply retroactively to documents created
earlier.

I can't quite tell what the problem might be with your setup, but see here
and apply that information to your case (the three parts of #1).

It is possible, if everything is set up right, that something is preventing
the change from being saved to your Normal template.  Since it sounds like
you set it correctly, you might first see whether generating a new Normal
template fixes the problem.  See the "Testing the Normal Template" page from
this link:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

See if a fresh Normal template remembers your settings after quit/restart.

Daiya,

Thank you very much for writing a reply. I will test your suggestions
over the next few days and let you know how I get on.
