Restoring Word98 customizations from backup of HD?

I am trying to restore my modest customizations in Word98 in OS9.2. They
appear to have been replaced/disconnected about two weeks ago, about 30
minutes after a back-up of my start-up partition to a portable HD.

In particular my 40K file
   System Folder:Preferences:Word Settings (8)
which has the titles, but not the definitions, of several customised
address label layouts, was replaced by a new 4K or 8K default one.

I haven't as yet located where the actual definitions are.

Dropping my old Word Settings (8) file into Preferences doesn't get me
anywhere. It doesn't seem to reconnect with the layout definitions. And
within a few moves Word overwrites it with a new default. And the first
re-launch is declared to be the first launch of an installation or
upgrade.

I think I will probably have to start over. But having backed-up the
start-up (application) disk every few weeks, I feel ought to be able to
piece these bits back together. So I'm posting this in the hope that
someone may remember/know enough about Word98 to enable me to rescue
something.

Hylton:

Make sure that Word is actually "Quit" before you attempt the restore.  This
is one of the files Word holds in memory: if it's running when you replace,
it will overwrite the replacement from memory.

It's best to restart the system, but not Word, before attempting the
restore.

Note that your layout definitions are held in the template (presumably,
Normal template) not in the Prefs file.  The prefs file is simply a pointer
that tells Word in which template to look.  So when you restore, you must
restore a matched set of preferences and templates.

When Word starts, it will check that the things advertised in the
preferences actually exist on the system, in either the templates or in
various other files.  If they don't, Word will remove the references to them
from the prefs file.

Hope this helps
