Word constantly crashing- Readiris - pasting text

hello,
I am using Mac Word, OSX, and it keeps crashing.  I have used Readiris
9 to scan documents and that seems to cause Word to crash.  It also
crashes if I try to cut and paste and the moon is not in the right
phase, or something.  It is most frustrating.  If I start a document
from scratch, it seems OK, but if I import anything from a .doc ot .txt
from a ReadIris, or cut and paste large amounts, it crashes.

The following is from the crash error window.  I"m trying to write my
dissertations, which is frustrating enough without Word dancing into
and out of reality.  Any help would be appraciated.

Consistent and reproducible problems in Word usually respond to one of the
standard troubleshooting measures, which you will find listed here:

http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

Work through them one by one until something helps.  If nothing does, post
back. The most common culprit is a corrupted Normal template or damaged
Preferences file.

In particular, you seem to be desperately in need of updating Office--your
crash log says 10.0.0 but the latest version is 10.1.6.

Thank you and I will follow up with the sites.  On updating Word, I've
moved a few times since I purchased it and I ever so cleverly lost the
manual with the serial number so I don't even sneeze around Word to
avoid having to reload it.  Thanks again!

MS usually uses a sticker on the CD case itself rather than Apple's "put the
CD key in the manual" nonsense, so are you sure it's missing?

You might check this link and invest some time in trying to get a
replacement CD key aka license number. Or maybe you know someone who has
since moved onto Office 2004?

Apple rebuilt the OS from the ground up for OS X, and Office X is the first
version released to run natively on it. I can't even imagine how many
necessary improvements might be in those updaters.  In fact, I'm kinda
surprised that an Office written for OS X.0.0 even runs in OS X.4.3,
considering how much work Apple has done on the OS since then.

However, I don't feel comfortable traveling for more than a week unless I'm
carrying all the disks needed to re-install the entire laptop from scratch
if necessary, so possibly I'm a little hyper-paranoid.

v.X seems OK on 10.4.3. For the usual values of OK.

Yeah, of course, but presumably you have an Office X that is updated to
10.1.6. My comment refers to an Office X that has not been updated at all,
is still at 10.0.0, and like I said, was originally designed to run in, and
beta-tested on, that OS X.0 or OS X.1 that people hardly even remember.  It
amazes me that with all the changes in the OS code there must have been from
OS X.0 to OS X.4, none of them have run into conflicts with Office.

No, that is expected. OS vendors go to extreme lengths to preserve
backward compatibility. It does them no good at all if old applications
fall over in new versions of the OS.

Of course v.X suffered because it could not take advantage of new stuff
that worked properly, like ATSUI and Unicode actually sort-of working,
but it is no worse off than if the OS had not been polished up
underneath it.

The only one that really bit Word was very early on mishandling of
Postscript fonts. But that was back in the mists of time when the world
was new and all.

This might (or might not) cheer you up. At least one user (me) has
successfully teamed up Readiris and Word without those crashes.

So following Daiya's advice might have a happy ending.

PS I found that getting Readiris to preserve the formatting was a waste
of time for most purposes, but using its smart things for correcting
whole words was rmarkably effective.

PPSSST.. You wanna macro for getting rid of all those unwanted newlines
that Readiris makes?

copy it out of here, in Word Tools-Macros->create and paste it in
(don't forget a keyboard shortcut on the way in.)
Use it by selecting all the text you want to collapse into a single
paragraph and hit your key-combo.

Lordy! Look how long ago I recorded that!

It works by turning all the paragraph marks "^p" into spaces, then
turns all multiple spaces " ^w" that that might have caused into single
spaces in whatever you have selected.
