Strange boxes in Excel?

Every now and then, a peculiar black outlined box with white center shows
up. It is like an empty cell with a heavy border. It stays fixed on the
screen even if I move the underlying worksheet around underneath it. I do
not have a clue yet as what my actions are that bring that about.

What is happening?

Have you installed the Office updates? If yes, which ones? If not, why not?
