This is a customizable keyboard shortcut like any other. Tools >
Customize > Customize Keyboard > Edit > EditClear. m.

Make sure "typing replaces selection" is checked in Word | Preferences |
Edit. Delete counts as typing (maybe only on a laptop where delete is
really backspace, I forget).
