I am trying to write a paper in French. I select all the text, go to
Language and set it as French. The document is checked for gramer,
but not for spelling. When I run a Comptibility Report, it says that
French proofing tools are not installed. When I go to
Preferences\Spelling and Gramar, the Custom Dictionary is set to Custom
Dictionary. When I click on 'Dictionaries', and try to add the French
dictionary (located in the \Shared Applications\Proofing Tools folder)
all dictionaries are greyed out. They are installed, they just cannot
be selected. I am using MS Office 2004 for Mac, on OSX Tiger. I hope
I have provided enough info.

Custom dictionaries are a more or less different issue. What you need is
the French proffing tools (for grammar - which it appears you have; and
spelling - which don;t appear to be installed).
I don;t know how you ended up with a partial install like that but you
should check you install.
For Office 2004, in:
Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Shared Applications/Proofing Tools/
you should have:
French Hyphenation
French Hyphen Dictionary
French Spelling
French Grammar Dictionary2
French Grammar Dictionary1
French Grammar
French Thesaurus
French Grammar Help
French Thesaurus Dictionary
French Dictionary2
French Dictionary1
French Grammar Reference
French Grammar Parameter
If any of them is missing, try using a copy from the install CD.
If you have Office X, then in addition of making sure you have a
complete install of the proofing tools for this version, you'll need to
re-apply all the Office X updates which have considerably improved and
corrected the French proofing tools.

Thanks for the reply. I had all the files you listed, but it still did
not work. A complete reinstall of Office fixed the problem. This is
the third time I've had to reinstall Office to fix a bug. I guess
Microsoft is buggy whether on a PC or Mac!
