Using Borders and Shading, I can apply a nice neat line in the  margin
to the right of a paragraph.  However, I can't seem to figure out how
to have the same line appear for only half the paragraph. When I place
a right border around selected text, I get a box.  How do I get a line
in the right margin for less-then-paragraph increments? Word 2004 Mac.

I would do it by using a Drawing object.  Open the Drawing Toolbar and
select the line tool to draw a line which you can then move wherever you
want it.

Hello-
As you are finding, Borders & Shading is a _Paragraph_ formatting  property
that can be applied to any combination of complete sides of a paragraph. It
can also be applied to a body of text as a border on all four sides (box)
only.

The only option I've found (although I'm sure there is a VBA approach) is to
use the Line Tool & draw a line the length & position you need, but the
downside is that it will not move with the text if the text re-flows, unless
you take additional steps.

Put your insertion point at the end of the line of text where the line will
start. Select the Line Tool from the Drawing Toolbar and draw the line
(holding Shift while you do helps make the line perfectly straight). Then,
with the line selected, go to Format>AutoShape - Layout. Click the Advanced
button and specify Alignment (left or right as appropriate) relative to
Character, and make sure there is a check in the Move object with text
checkbox.

When you OK out you will see a text 'anchor' which you can drag as
necessary to reposition.

Just keep in mind that this is _not_ a sure-fire feature. It is best left
until last, because anything that causes the text to re-flow can muck it up.

Good Luck |:>)

Are you trying to do this to highlight some sort of change?  If so, you
can use "track changes".  Off the top of my head I cannot remember the
exact menu clicks to get this working (I'm not at my Mac).  However,
have a play and see what comes up.  If necessary, you can trick "track
changes" by changing one word on each appropriate line from X to X
(i.e. change it to itself).  Then a change line appears in the margin.
I do remember that "track changes" has the option of putting lines in
the left, right or "outside" margin.

Hoping that this helps.
