I'm using OS 10.4.1 and Word X. When I click on "OK" or "Cancel" the
application quits. It also quits when I click "Open" after I chose the
file. Occasionally I'll receive a message (following the "unexpectedly
quit" message) that reads:
"Database Daemon-New Settings
New settings have been created for this application. Do you wish to
use these settings from now on?"
I attempted to download a new font today, but it didn't download. I've
searched my HD using the font name, but found nothing. I opened font
book and "Resolved Duplicates", but that didn't help. I've also tried
placing the "Normal" template in the trash, but that didn't help
either.
I am able to open Word by holding down the shift key and choosing
"Open" from the File menu.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Brent
I don't know what's going on with the Database Daemon message. Perhaps
someone else does. But re the other:
When you shift-launch Word, it launches with a fresh Normal template,
bypassing yours, and bypassing any add-ins and global templates. Since that
works, it suggests the problem is with Normal or an add-in or a global
template.
You'll find instructions for finding/testing global templates here:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/Add-Ins.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)
After restarting, if that doesn't work, go to Tools | Templates and Add-ins.
It's also possible to make a template global by loading it there. If
anything is checked in that dialog, uncheck it and restart again. It should
stay unchecked.
I assume you had quit Word before testing Normal?

Thanks, Daiya. While reading the Add-In section of the link you gave
me I remembered I recently installed Acrobat Pro 7.0, which contains
PDF Maker, which was the culprit. I got rid of it and Word functions
normally again.
Thanks for your help,
