WORD formatting palette

I use WORD X and OS 10.4. Without any warning I cannot now access the
formatting palette in the VIEW menu or from the icon on the formatting
toolbar. When I try to do this it appears ever so briefly and rushes
down to the right hand corner and disappears out of sight in a fraction
of a second. Any suggestions?

This is a famous problem with well documented remedies.

This is a real FAQ.

MacBU knows about it, but hasn't determined the cause. Please

1) Make a screen shot (CMD-SHIFT-3)
2) Send the screenshot and a copy of the file

   ~:Library:Preferences:Microsoft:com.microsoft.office.prefs.plist

(where ~ is your home directory) to   jeffw@microsoft.com
