Is there any way to create new icons? The program does not come with a "save as" icon and I'd really like one..
Thanks for any advice

The command can be added to a toolbar but as as text only, no icon other
than a generic one that's used by default.

You might find it even more effective to use the keyboard shortcut:

Shift+Control+S

Thanks. Right now I have the text on my toolbar, amidst all the icons. I was hoping there was some way to create/import an icon. Guess I'll stick with the old keyboard commands as you suggest. This link might give you a chuckle

Yes, you can create icons and import them.

1)  They need to be 16 x 16 or 32 x 32 pixels RGB bitmaps.

2)  Word uses 24-bit BMP format internally, but it can also import PNG and
GIF pictures.

3)  Make your icon in a graphics editor, at the correct size and format,
then put it on the clipboard (Copy).

4)  Now, go into Customize Toolbars click the button you want to change
(left-click, once) to select it.

5)  Right-click the selected icon and choose Properties

6)  In the top left corner where the icon appears, drop down the disclosure
arrow

7)  From the menu that appears, choose "Paste Button Image".

8)  OK your way out, and make sure you save to the correct template, and
that you save (and BACK UP!!) the template.  I do most of my customisation
in Normal template.  After 20 years, there's well over a million dollars
worth of customisation programming effort in that file.  I wouldn't want to
lose it :-)

There, that was intuitive, wasn't it :-)

Cheers

Excellent instructions, John, except for 2 things:

It won't work in 2008 for Save As - it's one of several commands that don't
come "factory equipped" with an icon & won't accept one - either from the
included palette of icons or a custom icon. All you wind up with is a blank
space adjacent to the command name.

The second point is that you can't access a button's properties while the
toolbar it's on is Docked & the Standard Toolbar can't be "undocked". Even
for commands that will allow changing icons you have to do so on a floating
toolbar then move or copy to Standard if that's where you want them (since
the Save command is there it's assumed you'd want Save As there as well). On
that same note, if the customized button *isn't* added to Standard (or one
of the other 4 "top tier" toolbars) it would have to be on a permanently
floating bar - remember, custom bars can't be docked in the document window.

Oh!  That's an Interesting bug :-)  Save As won't take an icon (even though
it thinks it has...)  I had never seen that before :-)

Yes, I am aware that you have to shuffle the deck a bit to work on the
Standard toolbar buttons.

I think this is another of those things they left half-done in the rush to
get it out the door.

We cam accross that issue some time ago. Some of us loudly complained
about the lack of "customizability" of the toolbar and icons.

Actually, there was no "save as" button in the older version of Word either. Of course the windows version has an editor that allows you to edit or create buttons; I was hoping they would include this in the new Mac version...

Correct, at least as far as default buttons on the built-in toolbars. But
you could add the command to any toolbar, assign an icon & do away with the
display of the Save As... text.

Which version :-) Certainly not the most current one - 2007 - which has done
away with Menus & [customizable] toolbars ( other than the QAT & Mini
Toolbar ), let alone customizable icons for buttons. Further, Office on the
PC has also gotten away from bitmap editing altogether.
