When opening a saved document with dozens of endnotes I was shocked and
dismayed to find that after the first few numbers in the body of the document
the rest disappeared and tiny squares are in their place.

The endnote citation with proper number appears at the end of the document.

How can I get ALL of the endnote numbers to return instead of the empty boxes?

Your help and time is most appreciated!

Thanks for Thinking!!!

Are you using a Mac? (most posts that come via discussions@Microsoft are
inadvertent -- not your fault by any means). If not, go here, to where all
the groups are listed:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/FlyoutOverview.mspx

If you're using a Mac, or if you re-post as above, please give the version
of your operating system and Word.

It's necessary to know this information to give an authoritative answer.

Hi Prof -

If you have no similar problems with other documents I'm afraid it sounds
like you're dealing with a corrupt document - at least in part. Have a look
at the recommendations on this page:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DocumentCorruption.html

Make a backup copy before anything else. If you try #1 first please note the
CAUTION so as to avoid loss of the notations as mentioned.
