Checking the box next to "Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style" under Format - Paragraph - Indent and Spacing does not keep. Does anyone know how to make this a permanent fix or a rule? It's annoying!
Also, does anyone know how to set a default font for Word documents? I never use Cambria; I want to be able to open Word and start typing in Times New Roman or Arial

Format | Font, pick a font, then select the Default button, and it will
change your default.

Question--are you using the "don't add space" checkbox to workaround the
issue where there is a default 10pt space after each paragraph? If so,
there is a better way to fix that permanently.

So, how do you do this?
I want to type a list in singlespace, and every time I hit return it adds a space between the item and the item above it. I can't turn this off with regular spacing options. What is the permanent way to fix it? This is so asinine--if I wanted a doublespaced list I could easily make one, so why do they force it on you? Please tell me how to stop this! Thanks.

It's not actually double-spacing that is the problem. Word changed the
default to add more space between paragraphs, so that each paragraph
will be single-spaced, but between paragraphs, you get extra space.
Paragraphs are created every time you hit enter.

To change in just this document, select all, go to Format | Paragraph.
Look down to the find the Spacing: After field, and change 10 to 0.

To change this in all documents created from now on, change the Normal
style.

First, select Format | Style. Normal should be selected.

Click on Modify--make sure "add to template" is CHECKED.  You'll see a
Format menu in the bottom of the dialog--select  Paragraph from it, and
change the Spacing: After setting from 10 to 0.
