I have downloaded a few movie clips but when I try to play them I get
this error message
'The hardware licence for this content is inconsistent' What does it
mean and how can I get rid of it?

It looks to me like the files are right-protected and that WMP believes
you don;t have the right to play the files for one reason or another.
Look for a folder called DRM in the "System Folder/Preferences" folder.
If you find it, trash it and hopefully, next time the DRM files will be
re-created properly :-\
