Have just upgraded my Mac to Os10.4.2 (Tiger) and now my previously working
Windows Media Player is no longer working. I thought that maybe I needed to
up date my WMP so I downloaded the latest player but to no avial!
Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what did you do to fix it?
Its very frustrating.
Mumbles - 23 Aug 2005 23:36 GMT
I'm actually having the same problem, all of a sudden.  It won't even allow
me to run the installer!

You can either try to launch garageband at least once before you use WMP
(as suggested by others in this group) or as Rob mentioned recently:

I've got a  brand-new G5 running 10.4.2, new install of WMP 9, and when
I try to open a stream URL, the audio stutters for a few seconds, then
dies, and the stream never plays. I've tried launching GarageBand, that
didn't help; tried uninstall, delete prefs, reinstall, that didn't
help. Tried setting the MIDI default, that didn't help. It plays
non-streaming media fine, just not live streams.

Any clues out there for this problem?

Apologies to Corentin, but he's not in this ballpark.

OBVIOUSLY, WMP 9 for Mac X+ is NOT compatible with Mac OS 10.4.2.

Since I upgraded my Tiger, WMP has been useless.

Microsoft wake up & get with the program! Make adjustments.

I don't get it... If it works on my Mac with 10.4.2, how can you say
it's incompatible ??? What do you mean I'm not in this ballpark??

Did you try launching GarageBand ?? Did you try Rob's suggestion:

I agree that considering how many people have reported problems after
upgrading to Tiger, there must be an incompatibility with *some* Tiger
configuration, but it's be interesting to fond out why some people are
affected when others are.
The MIDI settings in the system are a tempting explanation.
Corrupted prefs and plists are also a rather common cause that might be
triggered by the upgrade.

As far as MS is concerned I desperately tried to find people who might
be able to do something about it without any success whatsoever so far
(just a quick reminder: I *DON'T* work for them).

Okay, you're in the stands after all. Sorry. It is mysterious that *some*
Tiger OS seems to keep WMP running and others not. I can't use "garageband"
because I don't have iLife. The MIDI settings are just as you said they
should be. Could it be that I don't have a DVD player? What can one do about
"corrupted prefs and plists"?

I feel your pain with actually trying to speak to a real human from
Microsoft. Makes me wonder if they've all been replaced by machines already.

I doubt that the DVD player would have anything to do with that.
Garageband and MIDI are tempting explanations since they can both affect
settings critical for audio and video output.

Trash them. WMP will re-create them from scratch :-)

I've suspected for a long time that someone woke up one day and assign
the task to create WMP for Mac to 2 WMP Windows developers. Once their
task was considered done, they never ever looked back.
Unfortunately, WMP for Mac is not developed by the MacBU :-(

Thanks for accepting my apology, Corentin Cras-Méneur. I've got just one more
question. Exactly WHERE can I find corrupted playlists & preferences, so I
can trash them forthwith?

Sorry for my ignorance. I drive the old iMac with a graphie see-through
cover, G3, 600 MHz, & 256 MB SDRAM.

The FAQ says:

> - delete the WMP preference files:
>  ~/Library/Preferences/Windows Media Player Prefs
>  ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.mediaplayer.plist
>  (~/ represents your user folder)

These two files corrupt themselves fairly easely and prevent the app
from working at all.
Repairing Permissions on your drive (using Disk Utility) is also a very
good thing to do.

Depending on how you installed Tiger (clean install ?) you might want to
reinstall WMP after all that spring cleaning since some elements of the
app might have been deactivated in the process.

I can't believe this, but Sir Knight, Sir Corentin, you have indeed
vanquished the dragon: It worked! It bloody well worked! WMP is again up &
running. Someone give that knight a job at Microsoft!

You are not only in the stands but in the centre of the arena now, with

Well they already got me in their MVP program (for Office:Mac... WMP is
not in the program :-\ ) :-))

I'm really glad it worked for you. WMP works in mysterious ways and it
is rather difficult to figure out whwat's wrong since so many things go
wrong with this program :-|

It’s too late for me to check because now it’s working, but in case i
helps, this is what I did. Some of these may be unnecessary or jus
plain stupid, but I can’t tell now. All I know is I did all of it an
now it works.

Delete the following:
Windows Media Player folder (probably in Applications)
~/Library/Preferences/Windows Media Player Prefs
~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.mediaplayer.plist (I think, o
something like that—like I said, I already deleted it all)
Anything else you can find in Preferences folders that looks related t
WMP.

Reinstall WMP. I was shocked when it worked, I thought it was som
inherent incompatibility

I also have a brand new G5. I just downloaded the WMP 9 and when I try
to play *wmv file, I get the message that it cannot be played, but the
same CD I can play in windows media.
Reading the complaints about MAC OS and WMP, I wonder if they are not
compatable.
Thanks.

It's a possibility. It depends mostly on the codec and DRM. What does
the warning say exactly ?

Ditto.  Ditto.  Ditto.  However, the version available for download states it
was last updated in October 2003.  But then on another webscreen, it states
that this version of WMP for Mac OS X was last updated on Sept. 1, 2005.

You can't trust these dates. Look at the version number.

I just got the new Imac.  I downloaded WMP9 as well as flip4mac.  I can't
play videos from comedy central.  It keeps saying I must download WMP 9.
Suggestions?

Some websites are stupidly written to try to detect what they think
the user should be using. Beacuse they don't know about Flip4Mac and
detect 'quicktime' they assume you can't watch the videos.

Usually using View -> Source and looking for a Filename="blah.wmv" or
URL="blah.wmv" is enough to get the URL to the video, which you can
open in Quicktime

HTH

I don't think you even get to this point on their site.
If you use a browser that can pretend it is something else (eg: a
windows browser), then you see a different message.

With FireFow: they want you to download a plug-in
With IE: everything is peachy (though it still suggests that I download
Flash 7 even though I have Flash player 8 :-> ),

Here is what I did:
I used OmniWeb and set it to pretend to be IE 6 for Windows on the
comedy central site.
I can now play videos from the MotherLoad, though the pages don't look
quite as they probably should. The videos stream just fine through
FLip4Mac.

Really really COmedy Central should revise this policy and let us, poor
Mac users, play the videos. Their minimum requirements obviously don't
make sense since the videos play. You should write to the webmaster to
let him know about this issue,

Better option:
Pretending to be IE 6 for WIndows makes you loose Flash content.
Pretending to be FireFox 1.5 for Windows is just fine. They tell you
that you need to download a plug-in but you don't: just click on the
links for your videos and everything is fine.

I know Safari cando something like that providing it's debug menu is
activated (but I don;t remember the procedure).
OmniWeb 5.1.3 can set these preferences on a per site basis (but the
list of browser is somehow older and I haven't tested whether it worked
or not.

I did that with OmniWeb 5.5sp11 (beta - requires MacOS X 10.4)) which is
available on the OmniGroup forums:
http://forums.omnigroup.com/index.php
once you have registered on the forums (free - but without registering
you simply cannot see and access the Sneak Peek area of the forums where
all links and instructions are).

I also just upgraded to Tiger.  I downloaded the Windows Media Player (which
the webscreen states was last updated 9/1/05).  However, after I hit the
Download button and checked the Info for the application, it says this
version was last updated Oct. 2003.  Anyway, I'm trying to get live streaming
on XM Radio and the audio doesn't work.  XM Radio advised me to download that
application in addition to Macromedia Flash 7.  I did all that and restarted,
but it still doesn't work.  Could the problem be the software being
downloaded is not the latest version???

Nope. The latest version *is* 9.0 and there has been no update since
then.
