hi, I have downloaded WMP (Mac OSX) and it is sitting there in my
Applications folder, but when I try to open a file, the window comes up
then a message across it saying "The request is not valid in the
current state"
Can anyone help?? I need to use Windows Media Player to make an urgent
decision...

What you downloaded is a compacted file contaning an installer for WMP.
You need the latest version of Stuffit Expander to expand the acrhive,
then you should be able to launch the installer.
It doesn't look like what you have is expanded.
