As a Windows Media streaming provider, we have been plagued by Mac listeners
having issues picking up radio streams ever since they upgraded to 10.4.
While all of the suggestions about deleting prefences and playlists do help,
the main issue we found was the htmlview parameter used in some asx files.
We found listeners we able to get streams that are launched in an embedded
player, but not streams launched in the standalone media player because the
embedded file did not contain the htmlview.  We removed the htmlview
parameter for mac listeners and everything began working.

Unfortunately, if you are a listener, this information doesn't help you
immediately fix anything.  But send the information on to the provider for
the stream you're requesting and have them take a look.

VERY Helpful...
It does help if you are a listener... You know you can send an e-mail to
the site you are trying to get to and provide them with this
information.

I'll do my best to escalade it to MS (though in the past it has proven
completely useless).

I have also sent it to my contact on the Windows Media team, but haven't
heard anything back from her.  Thanks for your help

I went on the X-Box site and tried to view the trailer for Area 51. The
video doesn't even try to play in the browser, it downloads a .asx file
on my Mac. WMP then launches and tells me that the file format is
invalid.
The file format is pretty simple:
<ASX VERSION="3.0">
 <Title>Area 51 Trailer</Title>
 <Copyright>(c) 2005 Microsoft Corporation</Copyright>
 <Entry>
   <Author>Xbox.com</Author>
   <Title>Area 51 Trailer</Title>
   <ref href="mms://wm.microsoft.com/ms/xbox/video/area51/Area 51
Video-Hi.wmv" />
 </Entry>
</ASX>

If I take the link starting with mms:// and paste it in the Get URL
command (command-u) in WMP: no problem playing it at all.

What browser do you use ?

Very often, you have to go through the tedious process of properly
mapping file and MIME type to QuickTime once you;ve installed it. I
would recommend using RCDefaultapp from
http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/ (free) for that.
